So I was grocery shopping with my mom (who doesn't live with us so I'm not 100% in touch with what's going on in her life), and we were getting the usual stuff - Cheese, Taco fixings, Bread, etc. But then she mentioned needing to get beer.
This struck me as extremely odd since I knew she quit drinking some time ago. I asked her why she needed it, and she said it was so she could gain weight and get back into a healthy BMI. While I understand the need for her to gain some weight, hearing that she was going to turn back to alcohol was a bit concerning to me. Yes, I am biased against alcohol, but even if I wasn't it doesn't seem like a great idea. I suggested she try eating a lot more protein and she said "Been there, done that. It didn't help at all."

What do you guys think? Its her life so I can't control her, but do you think it's a smart idea to be drinking to gain weight?

Yep, drinking alcohol can make you gain weight fast, why do you think so may alcoholics are fat, beer is mostly empty carbs,

I agree, there are better ways, you can get sort of milkshake things that are full of fat and sugar to help you gain weight, my Grandad used to use them. I forget the name.
Alternatively she could just eat as badly as possible.

Drink beer all the time. She will turn back to booze.
A better combo:
Greasy food + carb food + milk + not a lot of physical activity = gaining weight.

Considering that your mom had quit drinking some time ago, the fact that she's even having beer for whatever reason is a bit concerning. You could always suggest that she talks with her doctor if she's concerned about her weight. I don't know what her weight is, so I can't give any advice that you could give her.

What I say next is of utmost respect to you and your mom. Her saying that she's going to use beer to help her gain weight sounds more like an excuse. She has already managed to kick the drinking habit some time ago; her using alcohol to gain weight is concerning.

It's true that you can't monitor her 24/7, especially when you're not with her every single day. Still, I suggest that you keep a good watch over her just in case. While she might have a weight problem/concern, alcohol isn't a good way to go about it.

drinking beer does help in gaining weight .......... but thts not a proper way .......... also most of the indian beers ( kingfisher etc ) use glycerine as one of the ingredient ....... its not good for ur body to consume glycerine .......... and for being drunk by beer is the most ridiculous idea i have ever heard ........... it contains least amount of alcohol ( 7%-8% ) ............ it means u have to drink too much beer to get drunk .......... so drink beer if u want to have fun but dont drink it for gaining weight .

Beer has lots of calories and carbs, but there are much better ways to gain weight than drinking beer.

This sounds like she's making excuses to drink. Unfortunately, as she's an adult, as well as your mom, it's unlikely you can do anything about it.

But honestly yeah, this sounds like something I'd cook up to get alcohol without looking "out of control" again.

It isn't, that's not a healthy way of gaining weight, and it'll end with serious damage to the liver and stomach.

There are many other more effective ways to gain weight. Tell her to ask her doctor what kinds of nutrients she would need to reach a healthy weight. Also remember that BMI is not very accurate for most people. BMI doesn't take into account muscle mass, bone density, or the differing body types in all people. There are many other issues with BMI, but that's not important right now.

By the way, being a bit underweight is healthier than having no liver.
