The subject of careers is a bit of a rough topic to discuss with my dad. He keeps "encouraging" me to shoot for a high paying job so that I can be relatively well off. But the thing for me is I'd be a lot more content with a lower-paying job and actually enjoying it, rather than being a well-paid Pharmacist and loathing every second of my career. Sure, it means I wouldn't be able to afford a luxury house or an Audi A6, but I like to consider myself not overly materialistic enough to have that influence my job choice.

Which would you prefer - a job with a lower wage that you enjoy, or one where you're just in it for the money? And yes, I do realize that there's some people who would love being a doctor, but let's just pretend that there's only those two "categories" of jobs :)

I'd much rather be a cop with middle class pay than be making millions while making no differences in the world an peoples lives. My dad wants me to stay at the grocery store I'm at but as soon as I graduate I'm enlisting.

You're right, they're subjective terms. Speaking generally though, in this example I'd consider "poor" an income that is either just making it by or below the threshold to maintain a house, car, and satisfy your self interests.

Rich would be above that threshold, and you could potentially be able to possess commonly known luxury goods with ease/have an easier time obtaining them

I want to be a teacher, which generally isn't that high paying, but I love working with children.

Army because serving and protecting my family and country is better than living a life of a millionare.

I'd rather be poor and happy than rich and miserable.

Saying that I don't think I'd be happy operating in any low-wage employment given the usual nature of it.

I'm perfectly content to work blue-collar, average jobs my whole life. having less money seems to be a good tradeoff vs the endless, exhaustive striving and ruthless politics of white-collar jobs. sure working in say, retail is less glamorous but better a rude, boorish prole as a coworker than a smooth-talking professional sociopath wearing a suit and tie. your prole coworker on the loading dock doesn't like you but at least he forgets you exist once he goes home at the end of the day. try working with someone who privately fantasizes about you dropping dead so he/she can obtain that promotion instead. or, better yet, try being happy with your life when you're dealing with that shit every day. not happening Holmes.

Well in my opinion, happiness is the most important thing in life. What's the point in having a bunch of money if you're not happy? As the saying goes "money can't buy happiness'".
So I guess I'd go with the "poor yet happy" option.

Wow, those would both absolutely suck. I really don't know.

Having a job you hate bur enough money to take trips and buy stuff.

Or having a job you like bit going home and then being miserable.

So it's basically would you rather be sad at your job and happy at home, or vice versa. Hopefully I won't have to choose either.

Being poor does equate to being miserable.

It just means you end up owning less stuff that you don't need.

Id rather be rich and bored, because I know that right now if I was rich I certainly wouldn't be bored.

ok guys I've devised a new way to measure happiness based on material wealth, I call it the Cupertino Coefficient. if for example my score is 100 it means I have all the iPads and you have none and thus my happiness score is 100% while yours is zero. SCIENCE!

I'm not poor but money is sparse for my mother and I. I'd rather be poor and happy. I am thinking about being an educator and they aren't paid well but at least I'd be helping kids and have time off to be with my own.

Oh I know, I didn't mean that applied to everybody, just me. I'm going to be much happier at home if I have more money.

As someone who has been poor for a year, I'd have to say rich.

I'd rather have a rich job because then I could do what interests me in my spare time with all of my money.

If the job I'd like pays for all the things I NEED, then I'd pick that one.

Why would I have a low paying job that I like and where I would help others,if at the same time I wouldn't help my self and I'd have to worry about whether I'll survive this months due to inflation and electricity, phone, food, etc prices? No thanks. Plus even if I had the best job in the world,it would get boring after a few months and I'd be stuck with it and with ,,no money,,. Money is the most important thing in the world,no matter how much someone doesn't want to admit it. Simple, you have money, you have a house, you have a house, you have neighbors, neighbors who you can meet and socialize with and meet more friends over them and so on and there you go! Money, health, friends and maybe love, everything you could possible want. And btw. you don't have to choose between a job you like and a job that you don't like, but pays more money, you just have to use your brain and find a combination of a good job and big money,it's not that hard (not easy either, but its not impossible) “If you are born poor its not your mistake, But if you die poor its your mistake.” -Bill Gates.
