So this is a question mainly pointed towards Christians. What really makes cussing so bad? Why is it bad? I know tha Bible says to not use Gods name in vain, such as G** damn or omg, ECT. But what about other words such as a**, sh**,fu**? Not some like, whore, slut, ECT. But the simple ones I listed. I know Jesus, said for his disciples, I think, to go to some dudes home and they will find an, ass. We all know donkeys are called an ass. But I mean why does some simple cuss words become bad? I think Jesus or a disciple may have said damnation. But why do you think some cuss words are bad? It's like saying nigga, not used for racist or anything bad, but instead used kindly as in What's good my nigga? Aka "what's up man" I don't know why cuss words are bad? Does anyone here know?

"But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgement. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned." (Mat. 12:36-37)
"In all things showing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you." (Titus 2:7-8)
According to these verses, Christians need to be careful with what they say because we will one day give account to God. Most Christians are aware of the fact that God expects them to live holy lives. And this doesn't mean only not cursing, but also not swearing and avoiding use words that can offend others when we are speaking with them. Obviously, not all Christians are perfect, God is aware of that, and sometimes, for instance, if we hurt ourselves, we end up saying a bad word, but there are people who use it constantly in their daily routine. And you don't have to be a Christian to understand that cursing is swearing is something kind of bad to do, I mean, if we don't cuss, it shows we're more polite people, right?

It isn't. If you're directing it toward someone, like calling someone an asshole, than of course I can see how some people may be offended by that. But if you just use cuss words to emphasize a point or describe something I really don't see the harm. I think the entire concept of bad words is utterly ridiculous. It's not like they're hurting anyone.
Also, using st*rs to hide cuss words is just fucking stupid. Seriously, what's the fucking point? Is the phrase "Timmy is a ****sucking, *****y little ****face" really made any better or less offensive with the use of stars? No. We still know what's being said. It's just so fucking stupid. Just spell out the words. Using stars or abbreviations isn't going to magically make certain things unoffensive.

They're bad since they are considered profane and because come Judgement we're all to give a record of our lives and you must watch what you say. This goes to everyone. Plus cursing all of the time usually spells for a rash personality and limited vocabulary in one's vernacular.

Thanks for your replies! I mean I know cussing is bad, but it's just became a bad habit. I tried to stop and lasted for a whole month or something like that then I started again. I know cussing may be bad if you act like this "man what the fuck did that shit faced dumbass do that kind of shit for, damn!" Yea, I know acting like that is really offensive towards a lot of people. I cuss every 3 sentences depending on who I'm with. Sometimes ill be like, "but damn, dude I can't believe it!" I usually go subtle. I just don't know why its bad all the time. Aren't there some times where it is not really offensive if you say cuss words in a exclamatory way?

In some cases the words are just like ass for a fool, bitch for a dog, or other words when used for their original definition. I was banned from cursing in my mom's home, I would be slapped and spanked for cursing around my parents.

The same reason why some Christians think homosexuality is bad. Their scripture says it is and they want to appease their God so they do what it says. As long as it remains a personal decision it's a good way to live your life if it makes you happy (the cursing part).

Right, I was going to say it doesn't have to do with being Christian, but that profanity is just generally offensive in society.

I know plenty of Christians who curse up a storm. I don't see what's wrong with cursing.

There is just a proper way to speak and profanity is improper. I don't know how else to explain it. It all has to do with those words being considered by society to be profane, there is no universal absolute list of "profane" words kept by God that exists independently from society. Christians should always strive to give the appearance of self control and appropriateness. It's just good form. There should also not be an appearance of any other immorality, like adultery. So it's more than profanity, the idea is general.

I'm in between being an Atheist and Christian so I know some of what I'm talking about. A lot of Christians like to say they don't swear or cuss when they do every once in a while (trust me, my "Baptist" aunt says "shit" all the time...) I'm not going to sit here and shame all Christians because not all of them are like that and hypocritical but a lot are. I did a very tiny big of research so if you need to see some Bible verses that talk about profanity, there's this.
http://www.openbible.info/topics/using_profanity
Not sure if that'll help you at all, but it should. I, personally, don't care about swearing. I grew up in a family where it was bad, up until I turned about 14 and I lost my mind (long story, that's on a blog post if you wanna read it on my profile.) I do it every day and my mom doesn't care. I've cussed people out before, my mom, my dad, my older sister... I swear all the time around my sister (she has her own family now and does it around her kids and husband, although both kids are very young...) and I swear in songs or when I'm just talking. My parents just see them as words, which I do too and this is coming from someone who grew up in a very Christian household (very long story, but my family eventually shattered and now my grandparents live far enough that it doesn't matter whether or not my mom goes to church or not because nobody's going to ridicule her for not going.)
Honestly, I don't think as many Christians don't care as much as they might've about... say, 20-30 years ago. A lot of Christians that I've come across are very chill with it, although they don't say it.

Well I'm christian, I'm Bi, I cuss like a sailor ( when im pissed ) I'm not perfect, If I feel the need to cuss, I'll do it. I'm not perfect, see, Fuck, Damn, Shit, etc. I cussed, I'm still alive. It's because we're supposed to live as "perfect" as we can but I can honestly tell you that no matter how hard a christian tries, we "sin" and because I've been told that I "sin" everyday, I'm like .... well okay then, I'll do what I'm wanna do and that's just how its gonna be, I believe in my faith but I also know I'm not "perfect".
That being said, The reason its so "bad" is its one of the 10 commands and our God wants us to be as per... Christlike as possible ( even though that's impossible nowadays ). I personally don't really care if I cuss but that's just me, I don't see a problem with Gay,Lez.Bi.Trans. etc. people. Alot of things my religion is against I don't see a problem with but Mehh... Anyway, there is an answer.

Why are these kinds of questions always asked to Christians? There are other religions out there that don't like cussing. Even some atheists don't like cussing. Why target Christians?

I'm not targeting nobody!
If you got a problem with what I post, then take it up with someone who gives a fuck.
I am simply asking a question that anyone can answer. But coming from a Christian household, I know that words like:
Shit,
Fuck,
Ass,
Bitch,
Ect,
Are really looked down upon from Christians.
So that's why I'm asking them.
Who said I was targeting anyone. And this isn't even a form of that.
It a question.

They are bad simply because of a stupid social convention set out by the prudes of the Victorian era and before. There is no logical reason, well, apart from "it may offend someone", fuck that, if they get offended by a simple word they shouldn't engage in conversation.

cursing is bad because usually when someone uses words like that its usually in a negative manner and words have life so when you say something negative you are speaking that on that person and it will come to life because when God made earth what did he do? He said "Let there be light" which means that he had to say it and God made us in his image so we have a piece of him in usdo what we say it will happen thats why cursing is bad

Wow, calm down. It's nothing to do with the Victorian Era and all to do with what is and isn't proper. No need to be vulgar. Plus Christians aren't the only ones who generally or rarely are against profanity.

Ahh I apologise, that may have seemed angry but it really wasn't. Sorry if it seemed that way. But there is no logical reason for "proper and improper", again, just the remnents of what was once a much more prudish society. There is no reason for a word to be bad, just convention for it to be like that.

I definitely agree that Christians aren't the only ones opposed to profanity. But I don't agree that being proper is all that important. Why is profanity improper? What makes certain words inherently bad?
I have nothing against profanity, as long as it is used in the right circumstances. In a formal environment, it would be a bad idea to use it, not because there is something inherently wrong with swearing, but because other people would frown upon it. In an informal environment, I see no issue. If it is used to attack someone, there is a problem, but not because of the profanity. The problem is that you are attacking someone verbally.

Here's the thing, words are just words. I believe words are all the same, no one is bad. Now of course each word has it's own meaning. The "bad" words don't have the best meaning and especially when you say it too someone. When you say the word intentionally, then it's an act of sin because you aren't expressing any love to others. But really it's the intent of whoever is saying it that can make it bad or not so bad.
