View Full Version : Why are boys assumed to be smelly

Body odah Man
August 24th, 2014, 01:25 PM
I've been wonderin this for a while now cuz of my school experiences. Every time someone smells bad or we enter a smelly classroom, all the girls in the place blame the boys and sometimes we, or at least I, have gotten a sudden spray with airfreshener/deodorant. My question is-are the girls right and are we guys just naturally smelly without knowing it or are they just giving in to stereotypes? Or do I either just know odd girls or have I totally been told some weird things? What do you guys think?

I feel boys do smell more than girls, hence the stereotype. Not only I feel it and sometimes smell it, but it's been proven.

Well I mean, girls can smell just as bad as guys at times. However, I feel like girls automatically assume that guys smell worse because gender roles have always dictated that men do the "dirty, stinky, physical" work, which in turn obviously creates more sweating and, if you don't shower everyday, body odor. But the truth of the matter is that women can smell just as bad as guys. When I get back from a hard work out, or if I've been out in the sun all day busy with outdoor activities, I will sweat a lot. And if I don't shower that night/day I will wake up the next morning stinking. Fairly positive it's called being human.

If you shower everyday and use soap, and deodorant/other smell good shit, you should smell decent throughout the day*. There is no truth in saying "guys smell more than girls." It's all simply up to personal hygiene.

*unless you suffer from some sort of chemical imbalance that could cause excessive body odor.

I think it's a stereotype but look at society. We throw unique scents of perfume and lotions and soaps for girls but all guys and men get are these musk smelling colognes. Plus men are seen to the dirty and women to do the cleaning or cleaner which has a lot to do with it. It comes down to personal hygiene though.

It is usaually true as boys gennerally sweat more than girls resulting in a worse odour most of the time. This isn't always true becuase I have hugged some girls who make me want to hold my breath...

Ahh, that makes sense. Never thought about it in those lines. That study you mentioned also explains why girls have been the only ones to spray me with perfume/say you stink to me when I was younger. Thanks for your insight

The better question is: why is society stereotyping metalheads as dirty without hygiene when (at least in Serbia) they are a lot cleaner than the majority turbofolk untermenschen. I am the cleanest in class, but people say I stink because of my choices about appearance, I'm metal.

Like many have said this stereotype is because of gender roles that perceive men to be more physically active and sweaty than women. The more you sweat the more you smell, so that's where the idea comes from.

What you say is correct, though there may be some hormonal influences and all, both guys and girls can smell bad. Everyone of us has apocrinal glands mixed in with the sweat glands and these secrete smelly pheromones that mix with the sweat, add to that days of not showering or bathing at all.

Also take into account most grooming products for women have different smells than the ones designed for men.

Men do actually sweat easier - i.e., get 'smelly' easier:

Women are better at regulating the amount amount of water their body is losing, so they tend to sweat less and won’t begin sweating till they reach a higher temperature than men typically start sweating at. However, this does not mean that women regulate body temperature better than males. In fact, since a women’s sweat rate is lower and provides less opportunity to dissipate body heat, female body temperature may actually rise more, especially during exercise. Still, when it comes to sweating, men can sweat up to 50% more than women.

http://www.rexonasweatclinic.co.nz/why-do-women-sweat-less-than-men

Men had a significantly higher sweat rate (1.12 L[middle dot]h-1) compared to women (0.57 L[middle dot]h-1), despite the fact that there were no significant gender differences in ad libitum fluid intake.

http://journals.lww.com/nsca-jscr/Abstract/2006/08000/Gender_Differences_in_the_Sweat_Response_During.40.aspx

The stereotype isn't baseless.

It also varies based on body chemistry. We all have a different body chemistry which is why some sweat more, or less, smell worse, or why perfumes don't smell the same on everyone. Your diet affects your odor as well regardless of gender.

Well, that's the thing, there is no true perfect diet. Go with what you love and eat plenty of vegetables and fruit. Not everyone can do vegan or vegetarian, so do what works. Eating healthy just means to watch what you eat.

It is more acceptable for women to stop what they are doing and try to smell good (ie put on scented lotion, perfume, etc... in public) while boys only opportunity when they go home and shower.

Soooo while men and women may stink equally, women have more opportunity to cover it up.

Why do girls always assume us guys to be smelly?

I've never heard that or noticed that trend.
Guys do sweat more and produce stronger pheromones, so we do "smell" stronger than females. But I wouldn't use the word "smelly", in terms of being offputting or something worth avoiding

Not by idle assumption and casual speech, no.

Obviously if someone just came from the gym and are clearly sweaty then that's what anyone would say of that person, male or female.
And there's also the little quirk of people writing "you smell" on random binders, papers, etc, but they're not being serious.

So I've never heard that generalized "boys smell" concept. I also live in a completely separate culture

I guess because we are more active. We just do a lot more activities that require us to have an odor I guess. Girls are also supposed to smell good and how perfume makes girls smell like flowers and fruit while cologne sometimes smells gross and that's just how the world is. They want men to smell manly and masculine like we are working hard.

I don't remember cuz I've been bathed by parents/sitter til I was 8 or something (nothing inappropriate ever happened, dw). Was just a routine bath, only babysitter thought I needed to smell nicer than normal for some reason. And no, that's not why I hate baths. I hate em cuz I know they're needed yet it knowing why they're needed doesn't make em fun. Plus my sister tries to make me take as many scented baths as possible cuz of my 'boy stink' and I hate scents. I don't hate them because of a trauma or anything like that unless the trauma happened when I was 4 (that's when I started hating em according to parents)

what i've noticed, especially when it's a hot day, is some boys in class smell like piss. they try to hold it in when they need to piss and it leaks out some. I never noticed that about girls.

Well, I don't see what else to add except, deodorant ftw!
More seriously, those who refuse to use deodorant because it contains chemicals and what not: wake up.
Everything we are in contact with all day long contain chemicals, from the air we breathe, to the food we eat, the laundry soap, body soap, everything.
They say that a large number of people will deal with cancer in the future, it's not because you refuse to use deodorant, eat organic and whatnot, that you won't have cancer, statistics are proving you probably will have it anyway.

Well, it may sound odd but it does make sense, I suppose it's not really such a strong smell though, just bits of urine, but it would seem Mr. doughnut has a very good nose.

True. Cancer is a very big issue in this day and age :(

First thing to say is I have 2 sisters they spend half an hour daily trying to look and smell nice boys don't try so hard so I think that's why boys get the blame

Half an hour daily? woyo! I think u might be right with ur hypothesis, cuz I don't know any boys that work that hard on hygiene. Heck, I find ten minutes a lot.

I suppose the fact girls do take more care of themselves they will tend to be cleaner as well and I know it's not even all boys and men who uses deodorant since they consider it more like a beauty accessory, that combined to the stronger hormones of boys end up not smelling too good.
If you add to that some teenagers have a phase where they despise showers or baths then it will certainly smell.

True, but this thread is about how, in general, guys that use deoderant, shower daily are still being criticized of stinking by females. I made this cuz I was wondering why, y'know.

That only leaves the hormones then.

Hormones: makes you wank a lot, makes you smell a lot (especially when wanking) haha.

Seriously though, I don't think any boy smell can't be handled with deodorant. If you still smell then change brand for a more efficient one or use more.

Isn't this like, the sixth or so time you've made a post just like this in this thread? Just saying, but I don't think too many people are that interested in this topic anymore if you have to say this. Let it be.

Anyways, short thoughts on this, I don't hear a lot of people actually assuming that boys are smelly that much, and if they are, it's likely because guys are presumed to be the messiest in general. :P

I could continue but then, it would get off topic again and my posts would get deleted again, haha.
I will just add that normally, deodorants for women are not as strong as those for men (remember the add for Secret saying: strong enough for a man but made for a woman?) Point is, it's usually not and so, if deodorants for guys has to be stronger, it's probably because guys does smell stronger.

Males tend to sweat more than females. It's not because males exercise "more" than females but rather because they have more sweat glands.
