I want to share with all you a highly unknown game but extremely good if you ask me :)

DEFCON

It’s named after the defcon system alert by US on Cold war, which make sense to the subject of the game.

Basically it’s a strategic game, the goal is to achieve the highest score by hitting enemy’s cities with nuclear bombs. Both sides could be nuked but the one with the highest score wins the battle. It’s extremely light and simple in its graphics, but the game highly payoff with its strategic deepness.

The game begins at defcon 5, both defcon 5 and 4 have one purpose, to place every unit and building, you cannot do that after defcon 4 or produce more units. Then defcon 3 and 2 is conventional weapons only and finally at defcon 1 the nuclear weapons are allowed so the real fun can begin.

You build up radars, silos and air bases regarding the geographic position, then place naval units in packages, enemy’s cities nuking is the primary objective. The score is not affected by losing ships or aircrafts, therefore if you lost all your army but you saved your major cities, you will win.

The typical scheme is this: place your submarines (they carry nukes) and navy near the enemy’s territories, overrun the AA batteries and make a massive nuclear attack with both subs and Silos while defending yours.

Obviously the major cities are the most important targets so you need to find the balance, between placing the Silos not too far from each other or leave many cities unprotected, this requires a lot of thinking and meditation.

Then, you don’t need forcedly to overrun the other side’s ships, you can flank them or find weak spots (unprotected cities).

As you can see this game is with no economics, units production, tech trees, resources, etc., it’s simplicity is what makes it great. You can stay hours and hours thinking and changing your plans according to the situation and not get bored.

BTW, the soundtrack is amazing, every single part is haunting beyond believe.

So download the free version from Steam and give it a chance, every single fan of strategic games should try it.:D
