there's something i wonder about. i'm paranoid that if i post pictures of my family members, someone could use some kind of face recognition software and find any other pictures of them in a database, like use it to dig up a driver's license or school ID etc. am I just being ridiculously paranoid over this idea? does anything like that exist at all?

That technology does exist, but it's not nearly accurate as in movies and stuff. And typical civilians wouldn't have access to the software that actually works. And there's not really just one big database containing mugshots of everyone on earth. They'd have to run it through multiple different databases, but most of the ones the average person would have access to probably wouldn't contain your family members anyway. I doubt you have anything to worry about.
If I wanted to find out your exact location and the names of your family members there would be far more efficient ways for me to do that. ;)

If you're actually worried, I'll say that face recognition shouldn't be a problem. However, I would highly suggest removing all the camera & location data from images.

The way I see it is: Alright, if they want to find you, they will find you, no matter what you post or don't. I son mind posting pics of me for that reason, but I still don't post pics of my family because they might not want to be known around the globe. If you want to post pics of you, I'd say it's alright, but if you want to post some of your family, have a chat with your dad and mom first, see what they think :)

Sure there is. It's called Facebook.
You and your (")friends(") put your life's memories on there, which is all very good and well for Facebook.
There was a row a while ago about a new Facebook camera that stores could have installed that would automatically log who comes in via this newfangled facial recognition.
You walk in, and Facebook(and everyone they sell your data to) knows about it within seconds.
Running a social networking site the size of Facebook isn't free, and they have to make money somehow. Advertising doesn't nearly cut it(how often do you even look at the ads?), so they resort to what they have lots of: voluntarily (and now involuntarily) submitted data. Just call up your local "Data Broker", sign the NDA promising you won't share how it all works, and people's info are a dime a dozen.
Of course it isn't quite that simple, and the pricing is probably a bit different, but eventually this will all get tied back to you. There's even been talk that info about what you do might be sold to your insurance company, who will charge different rates based on this!
Now this is only private companies. Governments are a different story, but still similar.
It is a safe assumption that, no matter what you do, the NSA can find out. They can go about demanding credit card data(and lists of purchases), wiretapping everything, and all that you've heard of since last July.
Facial recognition is probably but a small tool in their wide toolbox of surveillance.
Apparently some Asian guys made some kind of glasses that would prevent facial recognition from working, while still appearing normal. Maybe that will become popular?

Just avoid putting your location and before posting pics of your family members, do ask them first.

Facebook totally uses face-recognition software. You see that suggestion for a tag in a photo where it suggests a friend to tag? That's facial recognition right there, and it's pretty scary. Location information doesn't really matter unless you have a bunch of photos taken in your home with a scarily accurate GPS.

You can use a reverse image search on Google.

That's more of what I was thinking of. That face pic tagging stuff on FB. I think the idea is eventually for everyone to be tagged and tracked. And ppl are signing up for it all the time....this is me!...this is what i look like!....this is where i live!....these are all of my family and friends!....this is everywhere i go on the internet!....this is all the stuff i buy!....Like me!!!....Friend me!!!

That i don't mind for now because it tells you if someone's pic is a stock photo they stole.....But eventually I think it will merge with Facebook and all pics of you ever posted on the internet will appear with your name, house address, school, and the same info of everyone who knows you who's in that database.

this sort of exists, various sites have info on people in the manner you suggested. the most notable one that springs to mind is doxbox.
