I've never smoked in my life, but on days like this where I'm consistently suicidal, I'll sometimes say, I need a cigarette. And I have a strong urge to walk up to someone and ask them for cigarettes. Why does this happen to me?

Because your mind seeks recourse from the depressing thoughts in any way it can and cigarettes are the first thing it thinks of I believe.

because of the fact that Big Tobacco has brainwashed all of us to believe that cigarettes relieve stress, relax you or any other myths. The truth is that cigarettes do NOTHING for you, they've got plenty of downsides but absolutely 0 advantages.
I also felt like you before I started smoking, and I really regret it. I've been trying to quit for over a year and I'm still struggling.
Please, don't start smoking. It won't help at all, it will just make up more trouble.

You don't need a cigarette. Smoking gets you nowhere in life. It doesn't help you at all. It only kills you.

Why using cigarettes when there are so many sports activities?

Continue to be a nerd and study hard. All of the "cool" kids will be coming to you for a job someday. Don't comply to others who don't have a clue.

I think it's just because of popular media, etc. popularizing this phrase/action.
I said this before I started smoking as well. My advice would be to stay away from cigarettes, because they're honestly pretty overrated, and they'll kill you, but in the end it's your choice.

I've smoked a few cigarettes. Don't think it's a good idea though.

It's gonna be hard for you to quit. I'm not telling you what to do, just there are consequences for things. :(

I barely quit and I smoked for 5 months. Don't do it, smoking is just tobbacco industry assisted suicide.

Because people smoke to ''relieve stress'' it's a mental & physical addiction.
So most likely you know someone who smokes when they get stressed and are sort of mimicking that behavior

smoking does "relieve stress" temporarily with the nicotine relaxing you, but you've made it this far without it. you'll survive

I have lived through mild depression for about three years. Once you smoke, and you're still depressed, you're going to keep coming back to those cigarettes. They are extremely unhealthy, expensive, and they will ruin you're body in years. Smokers, in general, have stinky breath, yellow teeth, and bad lungs. That's why you hardly see people running around after they smoked a pack a day for a couple years. There are other alternatives that are better. I am not suggesting you to try this, but e-cigarettes are healthier and can deliver Nicotine to the body without the nasty carcinogenics and toxins that are in cigarettes.
My coping methods for mild depression are fairly normal. I do what I love to do, mostly playing on the computer. Once you find a distraction to get you're mind of you're depression, you won't notice you're depression. You can do what you want to and are good at, just don't become a social outcast. I have shyness, when in public and it sucks. Sometimes I look at people weird on accident, and then they look at me as if I did it on purpose.
A fact is that Caffeine does help depression, and it is available almost everywhere you go. Just be careful to not overdose on the caffeine, I would suggest a mug or two a day.
Stay safe!

It's actually VERY hard for someone to overdose on caffeine without doing it intentionally! :) I think the amount is something like 8g. You'd literally have to drink several pots of coffee to get that amount.
But yes, you're absolutely right. The only thing I would add is to be careful with caffeine as, like any other drug, it can cause addiction. (and in turn, withdrawal. Unpleasant.)

I've smoked once or twice..well...more like 11 or 12 times, I highly recommend you don't, it's not even nice. When I feel the way you do, wich is quite often, I take all the medications I'm on, mix them with various painkillers and take them all, it makes me happy as fuck then knocks me out for about 12-13 hours.
I highly recommend against that as well, it does serious damage to your liver.
Have you considered talking to someone about your feelings?
