I would research the rules of football and some of the common tactics that are used. You can find a book on it at the library.

Definitely make sure you know the rules. One thing I can tell you about sports teams/practices is that they teach you the moves (running, catching, throwing, ect) but not the rules. They assume you know already.

Other than that, just be prepared to work your butt off, especially in football. coaches are famous for working you like a dog at first, to weed out the ones who aren't dedicated enough.
