This wasn't 2014, but The Walking Dead. Most games that are spinoffs of TV shows suck, but this one was absolutely spectacular. It had a storyline to rival the last of us. I actually cried when I was forced to, well, I don't want to give anything away, but there's one moment (actually there are dozens of moments) where something very very bad happens to a very lovable main character and you're forced to make an excruciating decision. I think that the storyline is one of the most underrated aspects of a game. When a game can actually manage to make you feel, and care about the characters, that's rare. Some people don't like the cut scene heavy movie like feel of the game, but they can all go fuck themselves or play Call of Duty or some shit. The Last of Us is for gamers who actually want to develop an emotional connection to the characters and see their in game choices actually affect the game and the outcome. I give it 10/10. Most underrated game of the year.

Anyways for me it's a tough choice between Strider and Sunrider: First Arrival, both came out of nowhere and both were amazing surprises.

Didn't really say the game had to be RELEASED in 2014, also, both of my games have had BIG updates this year, 1.2.4 for Terraria and 1.8.0 for Minecraft whenever they decide to release it.

For me my fave game of all time is 'Tomb Raider 2013' for too may reasons to list, but since this is about '2014 games' I will have to go with 'Wolfenstein: The New Order', mainly because of its visuals and amazing story telling.

I do think you're being a little unfair to Steam though, they advertise indie games just as much as the big titles. Also Steam does have a lot of good cheap indie titles, also a lot of shite ones but that's why they have public reviews.
