How to tell if a shy girl likes you or sees you as a friend?

I'm finding it really confusing. This girl is acting like all the other girls I'm friends with though she doesn't talk to me much, only when I talk/ask questions to her she responds to me. But to everyone else, she talks to them and asks questions other than me.

Also, the guy I think she likes is trying to find a partner for his formal. I told him to tell this girl thinking she likes him and he told me "no, she's not my type, that's your area" and something along those lines.

How can I tell she likes me and is shy or sees me as a friend. It's really confusing me. Please help.

Well, maybe you should just ask her. If you're nice she will probably be nice, too. Just tell her: "I think you are very nice, would you ever consider going out with me?" If she doesn't like you, she will just say: "I don't really think about you in this way." And you have to understand this and move on. But if she does like you, you will find out about it. Now, wouldn't that be something worth knowing?
