View Full Version : 50 Shades of Grey: Should it be allowed?

So I got to thinking about the 50 Shades trilogy and my mom has all three books and so does my sister (who was 19 when she read them and living on her own. My mom let her bring the books when she came to visit and she read them at my house.)
I'm 16 and I think I wanna read them but I haven't started them yet. Obviously, I know a lot about sex (I'm in the Puberty section more than anything on VT).

Would you let your 14/15/16 year old read it?
Should it be allowed in high schools?
Is it banned at YOUR high/middle school?
Have you read it and have your parents cared if you did?

I would let my 16 year old read it, if they're anything like me. I think it should be allowed, I don't like censorship of books and literature. I'm not sure if it's banned at my school, but I'm pretty sure it is... And I don't think my mom would care, we've talked about the movie trailer and the book before. We didn't go into a big discussion but we would just mention it or whatever.

Would you let your 14/15/16 year old read it? Honestly, censoring teens to exploring things is obviously pointless. I know plenty of teens who've actually read that book, legal or not. It's like all the illegal things, smoking, drinking, drugs. Teens explore things. Its best to tell them the consequences and set their views for themselves.
Should it be allowed in high schools? Nope.
Is it banned at YOUR high/middle school? If it was, that would be stupid. Most of our graduating class already has two baby daddies.
Have you read it and have your parents cared if you did? Nope, my mom doesn't have it around for me to read it and honestly erotic romances aren't my kind of thing.

I've read it and I'd most likely let my kids read it (although I kind of hypocritically hope they don't want to read stuff like this), so that we could then laugh at how utterly shitty it is. Honestly, I don't care, nor does it really matter, if it's allowed in schools or not because it has little to no literary value, so no sane teacher would actually make it part of their curriculum. Kids at my school have carried these books around in plain view and teachers haven't complained. My mom doesn't know that I've read it, but I don't think she'd mind.

I'd try to discourage them from reading it because romance novels like that are basically the literary equivalent of The Room, but I wouldn't prevent it.

Nope my children would not be reading anything like that in my house.

What exactly is 50 Shades of Grey? Also, there are infinite shades of grey because just a tiny difference of white or black can change the pigment all together, but I digress, what is this book.

What exactly is 50 Shades of Grey?
Pornographic Twilight Saga fanfiction with the names of the characters changed for legal reasons and then published.

Would you let your 14/15/16 year old read it: Yeah if they wanted to. I don't agree with censorship
Should it be allowed in high schools: If it's requested then why not.
Is it banned at YOUR high/middle school: We don't have a very good library lmao.
Have you read it and have your parents cared if you did: No but they'd probably just laugh at me if then seen me reading it.

Would you let your 14/15/16 year old read it? I don't see why I wouldn't. I wouldn't buy it for my child, but if they wanted to read it, go for it. There's already a fuck ton of erotica online, plus actual porn, PLUS what they're sexually doing in real life. How would keeping them from reading one book help anything? I'm not one for censorship.
Should it be allowed in high schools? I mean, if it's highly requested, I don't see why not.
Is it banned at YOUR high/middle school? Yes.
Have you read it and have your parents cared if you did? I started it and put it down 15 minutes later. There's better erotica online that's free. I doubt my parents would've cared. They don't control or try to control what I read.

Honestly, all of this false, sanctimonious "morality" bullshit about protecting youth from sexual books is, well, bullshit.

Oh my God! My 15 year old who's probably already wanked to hardcore anal lesbian fisting on the internet is reading WHAT!?!?! Light spanking scenes?!?! That's horrible!!! It'll scare him for life!!! D: We have to do something!
OH MY GOD! MY 15 YEAR OLD WHO'S PROBABLY ALREADY WANKED TO HARDCORE LESBIAN ANAL FISTING ON THE INTERNET IS READING A BOOK WITH LIGHT SPANKING SCENES? THAT'S SO HORRIBLE! I'M PUTTING HIM ON MEDICATION THAT

er, i would not let an under 16 read erotica, and 100% not allow it in school libraries. arguing that they have seen porn isnt really valid, as porn is 18/R rated anyways.

It's a bit weird but I think it's okay. - It's just a different kind of porn.
