View Full Version : Tattoos and How They Affect Your Life

I've been wanting a tattoo since I was 11. I love the idea of them and I think they are awesome. My parents are opposed to the idea for reasons that I can understand. They always say it's gonna affect me in later life, but I don't know how. Tattoos have become part of our society and culture. They have been around for thousands of years so why should they be looked down on? 16% of our population have a tattoo of some kind and so why are people so discriminating against them?
What do you think? How are tattoos viewed in our society? How could a tattoo affect you in later life?
All opinions respected and appreciated!

For me, I got my tattoo at a time in my life when I was set on committing suicide. One of my very best friends came over and in an attempt to distract me, told me that we should go to the tattoo place and get a tattoo.
I never knew how much a little bit of ink under my skin would save me. The quote is a constant reminder to keep going no matter how much I want to off myself sometimes.

That's amazing! How has it affected your life socially? (So, what do the people in you social circles say?)

It hasn't affected me socially. But it affected my relationship with myself.

By the way, what quote, may I ask? The best tatoos are those full of meaning behind them, not those with just pretty graphics.

It's an Icelandic proverb but I would prefer to keep it personal for private reasons.

I have 13 tattoos, I done my first one when I was 13 and it went from there. It doesn't effect me, I'm lucky because I have a pretty face so it isn't that bad. Plus, if someone doesn't like it then they can suck my ass because it's part of me.

I don't really want a tattoo, but idk alot of people do and some of them look pretty cool. I respect people's tattoo's as long as they look good and are something worthwhile and proffesional, you wouldn't want to get dickbut tattood on your face and walk around with it the rest of your life.
Also with some people the tattoos look terrible when their skin gets rimply as they get older/

Tattoos CAN hinder you from getting decent jobs, depending on whether or not you are able to hide thhem based on their location. I think it's dumb, how a pretty flower on someone's arm can keep someone's career from progressing, but that's just how society is right now. I do wish it would change.

The reason I'm not absolutely covered in tattoos is because I want a good-paying job, lol. So many people get their entire bodies inked and then whine and moan when they're not wanted in a proper workplace.

I like tattoos... not entire body inked out in random junk, but something good and artfully placed. I'm not going to judge people based on what they have tattoos of- it may seem stupid or random to me, but who knows, it may have a deep meaning to whoever has it.
My current plans are to go to school and get a job in the business professional world, so I'd rather not risk it and let a stupid decision I made when I was 18 inhibit my plans later in life.

I plan on getting several tattoos, though I don't think I'll get any visible ones until I get accepted into college. :P

I like tattoos but if you want a decent job or be accepted in a good college I guess you have think twice before getting tattoos. Tattoos get more socially accepted but it depends on what you have and where you have it. My Dad used to work as a tattoo artist and often told me that people came and asked about cover ups and places where they can remove their tats as they didn't think before getting them.
I have a small tattoo somewhere you don't really see it at once, I plan to add more when I get older but I think carefully about it before being inked, so that I won't look like a pump, gang member or idiot afterwards as so many tattooed people do ;)

As everyone else has said, depending on where you get the tattoo, how large it is, and most importantly what it is can effect your job opportunities and college eligibility. If you get a face tattoo, for example, don't expect to have any high quality jobs or go to Harvard. However, a smaller tattoo, perhaps on your upper arm that isn't visible when you wear an average shirt, probably won't hinder you much, if at all.
Personally, if I do decide to join my nations military, I will more than likely get a few tattoos on my upper arm that signify my service.

I'm okay with tattoos as long as they are not gang tattoos, full body, scary, or utterly atrocious to see. Military, change of life, epiphany, many things spawn one. I respect them enough not to scold others. I kinda want one, and I kinda don't. The idea of a permanent marker to my skin is not appealing to me.

Good for you! Good luck serving the military (US right? Or no? I'm not sure.)

Yup, United States, and either Marine Corps or Army.

Ooh, I could not do that. Marines seem a bit crazy to me, and I don't want PTSD but good for you. Someone has to volunteer else there will be a draft.
