Everytime, I got to the Nature Preserve with my family, we bump into people who are running through the place, practically out of breath. Frankly, I don't get the point of running through a muggy , mosquito infested forest for fun, or even exercise for that matter, when there are perfectly air conditioned gyms to run in instead. Why do people run?

It can get really tired really quick when you run on a treadmill in the gym and nothing really changes. I like running through forests because its usually always nice and cool and the temperature doesn't really change whether its blistering hot outside or not - plus you usually always see cool things like wildlife / birds stuff like that.

just running on a treadmill is boring. this past week ive gone out in rain and 100 degree and jogged a mile or two each day. its scenery and i feel like i can see what ive acomplished.

People like to get outside and it's a good form of exercise. I go on runs myself quite often.

I don't like gyms exercising there is boring plus I hate having all those people around. So for me exercising outside is really the only alternative...and I love muggy, mosquito infested forests and the wildlife there. It makes me happy.

I don't know man, the indoor scenery can be a bit too exciting for me. 100% outdoors.

I'm not a ran of running but I do it anyway. Indoors has pros like AC, and you can watch TV and such, but outdoors, you get to see more scenery and I'm more inclined to go further, because I can't just quit at anytime and sit down. I still need to make it back to where I started. Outdoors, I'm not watching the clock as much.

I agree. My favorite thing is to listen to audiobooks when I'm running, as I'm not much for scenery and tend to get lost in the plot of the book, but I love the fresh air and I don't feel the pressure of people next to me as much.

If you enjoy being outside/in nature, and like to run/exercise, then there may be nothing better than running in a place like that. It's also a good workout. I know when I go running I enjoy scenery.

I run as a recreational activity, almost like a hobby. There's just something about running a 5k every morning through the nice, cool woods behind my house that really appeals to me.

Alot of people would rather run out side because oncewinter hits then they go to gym where everyone stays in side

I started running recently and I love it.
I'm usually very very hyper active, which makes me actually really tired and I annoy myself and others all the time with it.
When I go for a 5 KM run I can at least be silence for 2 hours and not jump around, ask existential crisis questions, make random art and just be too happy.
I like the feeling of being physically tired, so to me, it's kind of like a cure :D

Cross training, and to switch off and because I like being so tired I can't walk (not that I'm weird or anything...)

well the nastiness of the area may be that push that helps them run faster to get out of there quicker

Why run when you could walk?
I myself don't enjoy gyms because I'm very self conscious around strangers. And running outside just makes me want to die. But I think other people use it as a way to clear there mind of stress. After all who can think about that test you think you failed when your to busy trying to breath in 10,000 degree heat?

Exactly! It'll generally take your mind off of anything stressful. The faster you run, the faster you forget. (reply to Kanine)

Cross Country, made of running outside. I don't neccesarily like running, but man it gets you in shape.

It's thrilling. It makes me feel like I'm strong, like I can fly or something. Plus there's all that nice fresh air, I can watch the sunset, it's nice to have a change in scenery.

I myself am an avid runner. Been running cross country since the 6th grade and still doing it now in college. The reason I run is because of the team aspect of what is considered an individual sport. If it weren't for my teammates over the years I wouldn't run, and the teams (hs and college) are essentially the source for all of my friends, and I don't know what I'd do without them.
So a bit of a different reason for running I guess, but my friends who also run are what keep me at it (plus its good for your health so not a bad side effect)

Because I live so close to the beach, I actually walk along a path they have for people on bikes and for people to walk. While I am doing that, I listen to music and jog and run just to get any negative feelings I have out. I do enjoy it alot. I don't get tired for a hour or so then I can slow down.

I prefer running outside, the terrain is better to run on than a treadmill, plus it's more interesting outside

Running outside can give you more scenery to look at which can take your mind off the run (for some people) and therefore, may not make the run seem as strenuous. plus, esp when it is cooler outside, a run can seem refreshing. in the summer however, running outside can be brutal. I know plenty from playing football and baseball. Running, is great for cardio though.
