I have recently come across a free laptop. Its a Dell D505, currently running Windows 7, but I want to change that, heres a list of possibe OS's I want to use.
-Ubuntu
-Mint Chinemon
-Windows XP
-Windows 8 (If it can run)
-Crunchbang
-OSX Snow Leopard (Hachintosh)
Wich should I use?
The one with the most votes will be installed.
I will be keeping Windows 7 but I want multiple OS's. What should I installalongside it?

ALL of them! :P
An old hackintosh would be a really interesting PC, as well as probably being fun to setup.
Crunchbang, I know you use it and... you know better than I do! It's lightweight!
Mint > Ubuntu. You're not missing any repositories and gain a better UI.
WXP > W8(.1) I don't see having a nice experience with 8.1 on that hardware.

Hmm, a 160GB HDD (biggest IDE drives around) and install all of them, hmm, I like that idea. But having them WITH OSX may be difficult as OSX need specific boot loaders that may not work in a GRUB menu format.

I would either keep 7 or upgrade to 8.

I would honestly just keep 7,but if you're really set on changing it go with Ubuntu. Awesome OS.

So many people want me to keep 7 so I shall have to edit this to stop that.

I'll blindly ask if GRUB could could point to the Mac boot alike what it does to windows. If you have another PC available, I think the hackintosh could be the more interesting installation.
And holy cow, it's been years since I've heard of IDE's.

Really?! I LOVE IDE! Its like an old friend who comes and gives you a big hug just as you need it, sure its slow, and its old, but I love it and still like to use it. :)
But ye, when it comes to it sata stomps on ide's head with a steal toe cap boot.
I did try a hackintosh with another PC but I couldn't get it to work. It keeps Kernal panocing at boot,

I did try a hackintosh with another PC but I couldn't get it to work. It keeps Kernal panocing at boot,I, on the other hand, HATE all hardware tchnology, especially because I always get into some trouble with it, let it be...
Installing main windows on the second partition (32 to 64 bit change)
Figuring out GRUB for the first time, dual booting Ubuntu & W7
Installing Windows 8!
Data recovery!
Having I/O problems because the disk wasn't formatted as exFAT
Having problems reading exFAT on Ubuntu
Buying a notebook that comes with UEFI
Having the notebook fall on the ground, prompting the use of WRE, and the losing crunchbang's entry in GRUB.
Then, figuring out that I can't install XP on this machine.
Further struggling when I un-exFATed my secondary harddrive and the couldn't revert to exFAT
I hate hardd rives with a passion!
On-topic, I'll suggest #! with XP on a dual boot if Mac is uninstallable. And as I guess that it's a secondary machine, try BSD or something new as a third boot option!

I'm swinging toward keeping 7 and installing #!, XP and Ubuntu, that way I get the best of everything, and ye. Hard drives can be a bitch, last month mine died and I lost all the data on it. All my music, pictures, software, games, arggguu, only now, a moth later an I getting back to having all my old stuff. This time I'm making a back up!

This is kinda an opinions thread overall :p
Talking about IDE times, I remember when my parents bought boxes of DVDs just to back up a HDD. The hassle! I Once lost almost ~300GB of data. Thankfully most of it was copied and/or had been listed as a bucket list (phew!)

I think that I'll have Ubuntu or 7 as my maim OS depending on how well they perform.
DVD's?! Why not just buy an external HDD?

Back in the day, where 512MB pendrives were a luxury... I'm not sure if external harddrives were available back then, let alone financially viable. Also, we didn't pirate and hoard files as much in the past :P

Either stick with 7 or upgrade to Windows 8.1. Why do you want multiple OSes exactly? I feel like people are making uninformed opinions on Windows 8 because of what's been said, when it's so much more faster and more power efficient.

I want multiple OS's just because its fun to play, and that way I can use Crunchbang 90% of the time to keep things snappy on that old hardware, and some other OS's for software and hardware support. I'll just be using it for college.
And I just dislike the way 8 works, what was wrong with the way 7 worked? Everyone knew and liked it, why change? Its horrible, however I will admit it is much faster

Of all things, Ubuntu should definitely be one of the choices you make. Ubuntu is such a flexible OS. Mint is pretty much Ubuntu with a different UI that you could just install on the actual OS.
Though if you want real power, ArchLinux. 'Nuff said.

If it's just for fun you'd probably be better off using a virtual machine. Why sacrifice valuable disk space on your hard drive if you have no real need for it? Also have you considered just...staying on 7? Imagine you're in college and then your computer boot management or file system screws up and you need to reformat your drive? It might be just better sticking with one, solid stable system. Well, that's what I think, and know from experience when I messed up my computer from trible-booting Linux, Hackintosh and Windows. It wasn't worth the hassle or the time.

Because I just want to mess around, and I back up all my collegfe work to my external hdd and to the cloud anyway out of habbit, so its in 3 places.
And this isnt going to be work done on my laptop, work will be done on te college computers, not on private laptops, when I said I would be using it for college I meant just for browsint the internet when im there or looking up a quick fact when on my break. Its more of a machine I will take to college, not use for college.
