What is your opinion about this issue? Please, make sure your answers are based on proof and be polite, as this is a delicate topic both for us, Greeks, and our neighbours. Thank you

What is the issue exactly? Is it because of the name or...?

Is this about the fight that should Macedonia be for Slavs or for Greeks? If so, I'm neutral. Greeks and Slavs have already their own lands.

It's cute that a bunch of misnamed Slavs try and hijack Greek cultural icons like Alexander the Great, but if you view it as the same thing as there being a Bill Clinton boulevard in Albania, it's kind of not a big deal.

Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, after all.

Well, it is not just about the name. The neighbours try to become a nation, which comes from the people living in the ancient Kingdom of Macedonia, but this is, where the big fight is, was this kingdom a Greek or a seperate nation?? Well, many proof exists and shows the identity of this kingdom, which shows whether Macedonians' ancestors are the people of the Greek Macedonia or from the neighbouring country.

Your country, Mike, recognises FYROM(this is the name used by the UN, EU, IMF...) as Republic of Macedonia. But each country which starts diplomatic relations whith the neighbouring one should give an explanation on why do you recognise this country as Macedonia or FYROM, because there is a "fight" in process, so this should have happened. Unfortunately, many countries recongise the neighbours as Macedonia, whithout even knowing what is going on.

It is not just about Macedonia being greek or slavic. And, just for informing you, they don't really like the term Slav, even they are Slavs, as Slavs came in Balcans in the 6th century B.C., so this rejects all their philosophy-propaganda(for me it is)

No, this is a big deal. And we would never had any problem, if they declared independence without a big history. It's ok, the want to use the tight of self-determination, but not by stealing history from other states. And they don't just try to make parts of our history theirs, but also parts of Bulgarian history theirs. For example, Gotse Delchev was a Bulgarian who established the first Bulgarian independence movement, one city of Bulgaria has his name today. The neighbours try to make this historical figure part of their supposed history. So, you may be far from there, but your country recognised our neighbours as Macedonia. Why did they do it? What was the reason for not recognising it with their provisional name??

I would say the same, for example, for France as well. They recognise it as FYROM. Why do you recognise this state as such??

So, it may seem very simple to you in Canada, but the truth is, it is not at all, since for 25 years this goes on and I believe it will go on for the years to come.

Alexander conquered the Greek polises. He wasn't Greek. He was Macedonian. Not Slavic because they came almost a thousand years later, nor Greek. He accepted Greek culture, but so he did Persian and Egyptian, and the culture of Levantine peoples.

But, Mike, do you have any kind of proof about that? They were greeks, for 3 main reasons, 1st the name Macedonia(Makedonia in latin greek,Μακεδονία in greek), comes from the greek doric dialect's accent makednos(μακεδνος) which means tall man and can also transliterated as highlander. 2nd Macedonians believed in dodekatheon, the thelve gods of olympus, a macedonian mountain. This religion existed at least from the Mycenian Period and in this greeks believed in. Greeks would never believed in a barbarian religion. The word barbarian back then meant foreign. 3rd , Macedonians participated in Olympic games, as well as in Amphiktionida, a union of greek states. Basic requirement for participating in both was to prove you had a greek origin. Macedonians were dorians, one of the four main greek tribes. Dorians were also the Spartans.
