Hey guys, I made a decision last fall (2013) that I was going to enlist in the Ohio National Guard, and I don't know how to break it to my parents. My mom always says she doesn't want her sons in the military, and I have to keep telling her that I won't enlist, but I want to serve for our country. Does anyone know how I can break it to her and dad? Dad's brother was in the Air Force, so I have no idea what it's going to look like from his standpoint. Thanks!

I think you should just get them together and start off by telling them that you've decided on something to do that you're passionate about. Talk about it without telling them what it is and after you've said all the good things you can say, just tell them you will enlist in the Ohio National Guard.

Provided you are of legal age to join even if they dont like it they can't stop you.

When you are 18 you can do what you want legally. I don't support the military or nationalism, but thats your choice and as a legal adult you don't need their approval. If you want the approval, tell your dad who will tell your mom ( im guessing). May be the easiest way. :)
Best of luck

Tell her. If she really loves you then she'll will understand your decision. You want to serve for what you believe in and your mom doesn't have a real say in that.

Sit down with them and tell them that you really want to do this...explain your reasons to them. Maybe when they see that you are really passionate they change their mind. Why is your Mom against it? Maybe you can find some good points to change her mind? Go prepared into this talk and stay calm.
Of course they couldn't forbid you anything once you are 18 but it would be nicer to have their support, right?
