An Alberta teacher and a student allegedly took hot showers and fell asleep in each other's arms during a weekend trip, an e-mail read at a disciplinary hearing revealed yesterday.
"Hey, you sexy muffin, let me begin by telling you that I completely enjoyed my weekend. ... You definitely made me feel like I was the most beautiful thing. ... You have more energy than the Energizer Bunny and more stamina than any world leader," Lori-Lee Simard, a teacher from the northwestern Alberta village of Donnelly, allegedly told student Riley Aubin in an e-mail on March 21, 2006.
Simard, who has resigned her job at Ecole Georges P. Vanier school and left Donnelly, faces charges before a professional conduct committee for an alleged affair with Aubin, 18. Among the claims is an allegation she took a weekend trip with Aubin to Edmonton in March 2006.
Simard has pleaded guilty to a single charge of having an inappropriate relationship with a student, but denies it was either sexual or romantic.
Aubin killed himself on April 9, 2006, shortly after Simard's husband got hold of a text message the teen sent her.
According to a forensic investigator who took the witness stand, many of the messages read at the hearing originated from Simard's computer at the school. Besides e-mails, Aubin allegedly received text messages from the same computer to his cellphone. In one, Simard allegedly referred to Aubin's "sexy, seducible eyes and that blue steel look ..."
Aubin's best friend, however, painted a different picture of the teacher-student relationship. Testifying by phone from British Columbia, Ryan Caron said Aubin, the "cliche 'most popular guy in school,' " never mentioned he was having sex with Simard.
"He shared that he felt very strongly about her, not about any romantic relationship," said Caron, who added that Aubin "may have had a crush in the way some students do. He said that he loved her, but I don't know the context."
Caron also testified about naked pictures of Aubin allegedly found on Simard's computer. He said he took the photos and that the nude shots were among photos he passed around to Aubin's friends, including Simard, after he died.
Caron said that many of Simard's students had access to her classroom computer and the password to get on the machine was "common knowledge."
At the end of his testimony, Caron admitted that he "probably" would lie for his best friend "if Riley had asked me."
Asked whether he would lie for Simard, Caron replied: "Not about something that serious," he answered.
The hearing continues today.
