Tehran (AFP) - A revolutionary court in Iran has jailed eight young people for a total of 127 years for anti-regime posts on Facebook, media reported on Monday.
The eight, whose names were not given, were jailed for "acting against national security, anti-regime propaganda and insulting religious values and Iranian leaders", the reports said, without elaborating.
Those convicted came from Tehran, Yazd, Shiraz, Abadan and Kerman, and were each imprisoned for between 11 and 21 years.
They can appeal against the sentences.
Access to social networks, including Twitter and Facebook, is routinely filtered by Iranian authorities, as are other websites considered un-Islamic or detrimental to the regime.
President Hassan Rouhani, a self-declared moderate, has promised greater tolerance on social, cultural and media issues -- a vow that helped him defeat conservatives in last year's election.
But his fledgling push has been opposed by traditionalists and ultra-conservatives who hold sway in the establishment and key institutions including the judiciary.
In May, eight people were sentenced to jail terms ranging from seven to 20 years for crimes including anti-regime propaganda posted on Facebook, the opposition website Kaleme reported.

Yeah, this sucks, but it isn't exactly news. This and much more goes on in "friendly" nations all the time, the only reason the media is paying so much attention to Iran in particular is because they're "unfriendly", eg their economic interests aren't aligned with our own.

If this would have happened in Saudi Arabia, Yahoo would not have even made a news article about it.

Gamma Male was referring to their releationship with the West.
It'll be changing soon though: Iran has the gas and oil that'll replace that from Russia.

that's not what I think, that's the neoconservatives. my post was meant to mock them, because they harbor an irrational and paranoid hatred of Muslims and Islam.

Same goes to me-was merely mocking the US mindset in this situation. I don't support an attack on Iran, I'm glad Vlerchan picked up on that

That's right. However,as an Iranian who supports the government type of his country,it was wrong to jail those people even if they have posted insulting things about the government in social networks, because this is not considered as an act against the security of the nation, unless they try to make tensions among public.Maybe they could've just ignored it.

Well, It's extreme but nothing new.
Iran like many other countries don't have democracy and you can't talk or write against the government or against their own rules.
