So here's a topic that I'm surprised I haven't seen here yet, the social justice movement, and how it is on the internet.

What does everybody think of it?

To keep it short, personally, I'm kind of mixed. On one hand, plenty of the goals are reasonable, but plenty of the stuff either misses the point (the fact that rape and domestic abuse seem to be looked at as gendered issues, the fact that calling a black person "coloured" in the days of segregation is rightfully looked at as offensive now, but the term "person of colour" is seen mostly as positive), or is greatly exaggerated. (Western rape cultures existence, dress codes, the pay gap being seen as mostly sexism)

I could be wrong, though, so what does everyone here think?

We have a massive rape culture, it's not just western. It's been used as one of the most brutal weapons of war for the last 40 years

Yep, exactly. That's the way it is with most things though.

Domestic abuse and rape are definitely not gendered issues and it's a shame that they're viewed as such.

About the "colored" issue: We are in 2014, why are certain people even still being labeled by the color of their skin? Society is fighting for justice and equality but labeling people based on their skin color isn't going to get us anywhere. We're all humans.

I agree. We will get no where if we aren't able to work as one instead of categorizing ourselves by the color of our skin.

I wholeheartedly agree that we shouldn't let someone's race affect our opinion of them, or affect how we interact with them, bit saying we don't need labels and words for race is kinda ridiculous. I mean hell, why not do away with "blonde" and "ginger"? Why do we need any labels at all? Why not throw out "tall" and "short" too? It's not racist or discriminatory to categorize and label people into certain groups, it's just human nature. It's convenient to have lots of adjectives because without them it would be impossible to describe anything.

I mean, if I'm telling someone to go talk to somebody else, but there's another person standing right beside the person I'm telling the other guy to go talk to, and he's a different race than the person standing beside him, I see no reason not to use his race to help describe him. It's just a descriptatory adjective. "Black" and "African American" are not racist words guys.

Yeah but the problem isn't the word. It's what we associate with the word that's wrong.

Oh, well I agree with that. I think racism is sort of a cycle.

People(usually subconsciously) associate being black with "thuginess" and untrustworthiness.

Black people are more likely to be denied job opportunities, teachers are more likely to give up on black students, etc

Black people are more likely to be poor, have worse education, and thus more likely to get into trouble and do drugs.

People see that black people are more likely to be poor and commit crimes and be uneducated, and so they treat them differently, going back to the first stage of the cycle.

I would argue that today, the worst forms of racism are instinctual and subconscious, as opposed to the blatant hateful racism that was morr common in the 50's and 60's.

why yes, racism is largely instinctual. glad to see we agree here.

That's not what I meant. It isn't instinctual as in genetic, when I said instinctual I meant that it's mostly subconscious and that people who aren't really racist can still make racist decisions without really thinking that way, and that these instinctual thoughts are learned environmentally, an-

You know what? I'm like 90% certain you know what I mean and you're just trying to piss me off intentionally.

of course it's subconscious, that's pretty much the definition of instinct. not really sure why that wrinkled your jammies though.

Yes, but it's a learned instinct, not an inherent biological one.

A social justice movement on the internet sounds fine and dandy but the way it's handled is completely ridiculous, I don't even want to have anything to do with it simply because most of them seem to be complete hypocrites.

Social Justice Warriors are a joke. They are literally in a competition to see who can be the most progressive and the most offended. They create problems for themselves and have a victim complex where anyone that disagrees with them is oppressing them. White male who is attracted to black women? STOP FETISHIZING POC!! White male who is not attracted to black women? RACIST!!

Not everyone is going to pay attention or care about the 28 labels you have for yourself.

Not everyone gives a fuck about how "you're more privileged than me and i'm not going to do anything to change that except whine!!"
