View Full Version : I'm Tired Of Being The Minority

I only want to eat organic and my whole family including my grandfather thinks I'm crazy. Everyone in my family is the polar opposite. Everyone gives me no respect and treats me like a retard. I tell my dad to stop drinking Diet Coke everyday and that hes killing myself. I can't stand my whole entire family's on the SAD diet. Standard American Diet AKA welcome cancer into your front door. I try to tell them about have greens in your diet, limit meat, My whole family is so unhealthy and I feel trapped. No one will support my views and I just want to live with a family who is all organic, who actually cares. This is what pisses me off so much and I feel so much disrespect. I payed my own money for organic grass fed beef local farm, and at our cookout they freakin sprayed pam all over it ruining the whole thing. You think I want to eat Pam Covered meat filled with chemicals. We even have organic cooking spray and they didnt use that. I began to throw out the diet coke in my house. That only led for me being grounded for 2 weeks. My whole family is abunch of idiots. My dads a baby he needs he diet coke like a baby needs his bottle. Hes the old generation that has been ruining this planet. He could give two shits about the environment and nobody listens to a word I say no matter what facts I show them no matter what movies I show them. There logic is they wouldn't sell diet coke at a grocery store if it was bad for you. Meanwhile my dad munches on his high fructose corn syrup cereal.
I sometimes go 2-3 days without eating because all they buy is crap. If they do buy organic what kills me its not for them and they won't eat it. They automatically see the organic label and say gross, ewww, I'll eat what I eat. Their totally brainwashed. I no longer want to be the minority anymore. I have to say out with the old in with the new. The generation from the 80's generation x just pisses me off because they think their so smart and no everything.
I'm really at a loss at what I can do to save my family
Why does no one want to eat and live healthy, they need to grow up and stop munching on their mcdouble cheese burgers
I'm seriously considering moving out of America, This is probably the unhealthiest country in the world. I'll move to India, or some eastern culture that actually believes in nature to heal you. Let your food be your medicine and right now my family eats food to enjoy it. Not because their hungry, just because they like the taste of their soda pop. Give me a break
The only thing that would really make me consider staying here is if they ban coca cola, pepsi, monsanto, all inorganic foods. I wouldn't want anybody in the world eating McDonalds. It makes me sick that places like McDonalds exists. I heard in places like Italy though McDonalds has better ingredients. Go figure. I feel all this mess were in is lack of government control on companies. I'm sorry but America has too much capitalism now. Government should always be stronger than cooperations.
Phewww Now that I'm calm from that rant I must say I really do not know what to do. My parents won't listen to me no matter what I tell them. They just think i'm a pain in the ass trying to make them eat healthy. For the past 5 years I've been trying but to no avail. I do not want them dying in 30 years. I really do believe longevity is a science, we can all live longer, healthier, happy lives.
Thanks for reading through this whole thing. Maybe I just have to start my own life and move out. I'll be 18 in 3 months.
And please don't say I'm spoiled. In fact would rather be in easter civilization not western. I can tell you their not feeding McDonalds to starving kids in Africa. So please no hate that I should be grateful for what I eat. My philosophy is if you can than why not do it. I guarantee my parents if they wanted to would have a healthy lifestyle. They just choose not to for connivence and their too bussyyy. God cancel the cable internet and tv bill to be able to eat healthy. In America they make it harder and its more money to eat healthy than it is to eat junk. That makes me sick.
It just makes me sad that people do not care about taking care of themselves. Teens will gladly wolf down a soda with candy and chew aspartame gum. Don't they care. Doesn't anybody care about living a green lifestyle. Who's with me?

They choose what they put in there body, even though they should get food that you want to eat. Coming from someone that hates all vegetables and fruits except apples I'm glad I live in America. I don't get why you hate meat and stuff so much, people were healthier before we went all agricultural and just ate meat. Its more money because its natural, and we have limited amounts of it, droughts and other things come in to consideration. Why do you think beef, bacon, etc are so much? We can't really help the price, since fast food is just gunk but it taste so much better. They should respect your decisions though, don't get why they don't, just have to suffer through it until you move out and can eat whatever you want.

Honestly, there's not really much you can do to make your family stop being so unhealthy, they do what they know and junk food is what they know. I say that you should try and control what you can, because no matter how frustrating it is, you can't control other people. Perhaps you should keep buying your own food, organic, natural and whatnot, and make sure that they don't ruin it with "PAM". Make sure that you eat healthy, and maybe there's just a smidgen of a chance that one person may catch on.
Another solution may be to cook a dish for your family, a dish made with organic vegetables and meat and tell them they can't see it until, they taste it. Then you can show them that healthy food can taste good.
If you're feeling you need to take drastic measures, perhaps you could call a dietician, to help you stage an intervention and scare your people into eating right.
Also, I agree that McDonalds is garbage. I told my dad that once when he was eating there and he got pissed because he just wanted to enjoy his damn Filet-o-Bullshit.

Thanks for the quick reply. Their lifestyle is just totally different from mine. I won't use bee killer, I hate artificially scented candles, will only use all natural soaps and shampoos. They could care less about anything like that. They make fun of me in front of other family members for what I do. They can't handle my lifestyle and I can't handle theirs.
I won't take any medication that take claritin d for allergies, I take raw honey. We are like oil and vinegar. They don't like my lifestyle because its out of the norm. Heck I refused the doctors orders of acne medication. They can't make me rub poison on my body. I just got off the medication I was forced upon the last 8 years of my life.
I do feel it is a mother and fathers responsibility to feed their children wholesome foods and not junk. I used to eat nothing but frozen junk from the time of birth till about 5 years ago when I woke up. Now I have more energy. Lost 50lbs, weigh 150 now, can actually bike for miles on miles now. Don't have asthma anymore. Sometimes I wonder my parents didn't care about feeding us healthy. I will never feed my children the things I've eaten in the past. My children will never see a fast food restaurant. I want to grow a garden of food in the future for my family and I can't wait. I have a lot of big plans outside of starting a family but once I get situated then I can start one some day.

Haha! Yeah I constantly replace their things with healthy alternatives. Sometimes they budge sometimes they don't. I've kind of come to the realization that their never going to change all the way and that any support isn't for themselves just for me. I just don't want to see my dad die of a heart attack down the road. He's already got a hole in his heart.

Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust. If cancer doesn't get you, a bus must''
We're all going to die some day
It's great that your taking an interest in your diet-heck it would be good if a lot of people our age did but the fact is that you can't force your parents to eat something they don't want to, and likewise they're simply trying to protect you, and make sure that you're okay. They care about you

Alas, I know they do. I'm really trying to protect them too. Hopefully the FDA will start to buckle down on all this crap and not allow it. You know what they say, "we got the best FDA money can buy". And money has certainly played a part in our FDA

I'm not trying to be an asshole here, but have you ever considered that part of the problem might be you?
Like, I feel like your parents should be a little more respectful of your beliefs and all, but the same goes to you. Like it or not, replacing your family's stuff with alternatives without any regard for their beliefs (no matter how much better and healthier you feel yours are, because there's always going to be people who disagree with you) makes you look like a bit of an ass.
Respect goes both ways.

Oh my god, thank you for saying it about 1000x calmer than I ever could.
Being 17, it's not your choice! It doesn't matter. If you are so intolerant of other people living their lives and having freedom of choice, and so disrespectful as to waste your own family's money, and actively try to one up them in their everyday life, intervening in decisions that are honestly none of your business, just run away! Move out when you turn 18! It is not your decision to make. If you want to eat a certain way, by all means. But a live and let die attitude is NOT going to get you anywhere in life. I can guarantee you that right now.
And yes, I am going to tell you that you are spoiled, because those kids in Africa do not get ANY food. That's the point! They are constantly dying of starvation and malnourishment. There are tons of kids in AMERICA who have the same fate as well, and you're over here using starvation that is not the result of a choice, but the result of a broken system as an excuse to be haughty?
Clearly you do not know what it's like to go hungry. And I'm not talking about refusing to eat because you have a bias. I'm talking about going hungry because the 'McDonalds burgers' and 'high fructose corn syrup cereals' aren't even a CHOICE. BECAUSE THERE IS NO FOOD.
It just boggles my mind that anyone would be so selfish.
So sure. Move out of America. Eat whatever you want. Don't impose your lifestyle on others just because you're selfish. Ever thought that they might not be listening to you because you have a bad attitude?
Also, for future reference, this does not make you a part of a minority. Your diet is not some unchangeable thing you're being oppressed for unfairly.

And also for future reference, organic does not necessarily mean healthy and you can have healthy food that isn't grown organically.
Organic growing processes are also very inefficient. If everyone wanted to turn organic we'd either have to let a lot of people starve or start cutting down more forests for farmland.

They can choose to eat what ever they want to it eat. It was wrong of you to pour out your dad's diet coke.
Side note: if only organic food was available to the planet half of the population would die of starvation because there wouldn't be enough food.

Listen man, I hear you and all but it's their life. If they want to have that lifestyle then it's their choice and you have no authority over it. Honestly, I'd rather eat my unhealthy garbage and also include vegetables (which I do now) and die a few years younger than if I lived a life full of hippy shit that actually has been proven to not be any better in some cases.
Sorry if I came off as an asshole, but yeah, I think the reason you don't get any respect is because you give your family non stop shit about their way of life and how they're gonna get cancer. I wouldn't like it if some kid kept telling me that no matter how true it was.
Another thing, yes soda is bad for you. Yes McDonald's is bad for you, but if that shit was banned and only organic foods were permitted, then there would be mass hunger and starvation because organic stuff is more expensive and more inefficient to produce Not everyone can afford it. My philosophy is that if someone wants to be unhealthy, fucking let them. It's not a concern of mine, yours, or anyone else.

Live and Let die? I'm trying to save them from dying. I'm sorry kids in Africa aren't subject to the western diet. Obesity is a western epidemic. I am passionate about this because my parents are slowly ticking away. I'm a realist not an asshole. I'm sorry, institutions like mcdonalds don't exist in third world countries.
The whole world eats organic except America Canada and a the U.K. Even the U.K. has tighter restrictions. Almost all of Europe bans gmo's, Japan, Russia, New Zealand, India is starting the process of banning Monsanto seeds because of all the farmer suicides their and Australia is voting again to eliminate GMO'S from their country. Not trying to come out as arrogant it simply is the truth and I'm tired of no one listening to me when I try to save them. By no one I mean my parents. Hey, the 20th century had cigarettes, now the 2st century has obesity. My grandfather was an alcoholic and my dad is a cocaholic.
I see what is happening, and I'm not the only one. I'm not just going to sit back and let my dad die of a heart-attack in 10 years. I'm laughed at in this face for trying to save my fathers life. If he keeps up on this route I wouldn't be surprised of a stroke, heart-attack,
My dad is taking artificial hormones, you know how bad that makes me feel. I feel sick. Longevity is a science not just pure coincidence. The thing that makes me mad and what disgusts me is why would anyone not want to take care of their body. They really don't care. Let your food be your medicine or your medicine be your food. I look around me. The school lunches are a toxic wasteland. It cringes me to see people eat it. I grow my own food in my yard.
I am not spoiled, how is wanting to save someones life spoiled.

Thanks for being a little more understanding and no your not coming off as an asshole. I respect other peoples opinions but the person above shouldn't resort to name calling to get the point across. I'm talking about obesity, It's not that were eating too much foods, were not eating the right foods. In my opinion theirs a reason obesity doesn't not exist in third world countries. No third world country is subject to Monsanto's GMO'S, They do not drink soda. I probably will end up moving to a third world country. I would love to grow my own food and live in a small village.
I really do hate to see my parents do what they do. It shows they do not care about their bodies. The key to curing cancer is prevention. The SAD (Standard American Diet) is a welcome mat for Cancer. I've lost too many friends and family to Cancer. I want to do something. We are never going to find a cure. The cure is prevention.
That is why I am so passionate and why my parents actions make me sick everyday. They are so unhealthy. You are what you eat and I truly believe that. I want to share with everyone what I've learned and I truly care about my parents, thats why I constantly try to change them
Doesn't my dad know all his problems are because of his lifestyle. For instance everyone seems to think I'm crazy because I don't brush my teeth with fluoride. I also brush my teeth once every 3 days. I should start brushing everyday again but alas, no cavities. You won't get cavities if you don't eat crap.
I constantly show them the ingredients in their shampoos and cologne. They tell me everyone else uses them so its perfectly fine. It really is a lack of education and I really do feel people are underestimating how important ones diet and lifestyle is to their health. Surprisingly, My grandfather is more supportive than my parents are. He lost his wife to Cancer / my grandmother and he actually listens and gives me the time of day to what I have to say. I have given him herbs to help with his arthritis. His arthritis is truly better and continues to get better everyday.
I have decided I want to go to school to become a herbalist, a medicinal doctor. I want to spend my whole life educating people on how they can take care of themselves. It truly is important. I'm am not trying to come off as arrogant. I was freaking out when I wrote the last bit but I still stand on everything I have said.

It's spoiled because you don't actually care about how they feel in the process.
Also, you call yourself a "realist", but there are plenty of people who eat fast food in Japan, China, and quite a few other countries. Most have McDonalds, and most have McDonalds with even UNHEALTHIER options. You can't call yourself a realist if you only choose to see one side of a situation.

I'm glad were starting to think of ways to solve world hunger but I think we are moving too fast in the field of Genetic Engineering. Their are many other things we could do. Genetically engineering has shown no benefit to anyone. It is really only practiced in America. Thats where the majority of GMO's are grown. One argument is GMO's are making plants resistant to bugs. The problem with that is nature adapts. Super bugs are starting to form that can take down GMO'S. GMO's is a temporary solution to a more permanent problem. It will not last the test of time. Sure a few 100 years, then it will be completely ineffective. Just like Penicillin today. Bacteria are starting to become resistant to it. Right now they make tower gardens which are tower platforms that can go in your basement or rooftop. Basically you can grow fruits and vegetables anywhere. Once this system becomes more widely used less and less people will go to the grocery store. Imagine giving every on the planet a self replenishing tower garden. Certainty if we stopped funding wars, we could afford to do so. As I say, as long as their are wars, their will be world hunger. The only way to solve the hunger problem is if we truly put all our differences aside and work as a species to realize this planet is all we got. Surly we would come up with a better solution than GMO'S. I sure want to stop world hunger but not one person is going to do it. We must work as a super human together to achieve greatness. Unfortunately many other possibilities are more likely to happen instead of solving world hunger / world peace. Understand right now governments around the world have the power to kill everyone on this earth instantly. Before world peace all the nukes must be destroyed. Why are we holding on to them?. It really is a shame.
Basically what I'm saying is we've been growing organically ever since the human species spawned. It seems like western civilization through everything out of balance.
It's spoiled because you don't actually care about how they feel in the process.

McDonalds is healthier in other countries. McDonalds in Italy for example has so much better ingredients. No GMO's their. food is not half bad on the other side of the pond.
I really don't think my parents do care and that is the problem. They will eventually listen. I respect them but I love them, they aren't going to slip away on my watch. I don't give up that easily.
You won't find "fast food" in Africa. Theirs so many other problems that have to be fixed before we can even begin to solve world hunger. Were not going to do it unless we put our differences aside and work together as one super human. I do not think we are prepared to do that right now.
Hey I happen to be fortunate enough to be born into a life where I live in a heated home and have the ability to live my lifestyle. I don't feel bad because I was born into a fortunate situation. I wish everyone had a great life. As long as you try your best with the tools given, thats all that matters. We must live and let die. People die its a part of life. You and me will die. Nothing to be scared of, I'm not going to stop people from dying, We can only try to improve the lives of the less fortunate. And that really is a relative term. The less fortunate do not feel less fortunate. We feel bad for them because our lifestyle is not like theirs. Hey if they die at 20 they die at 20. I'm not afraid to die. Wearing no clothes may seem gross to us but is it really? Live and Let die is the only way. We cant keep everyone alive.

McDonalds in China has giant containers of fries, and most other countries do not have the American ban on large soda containers at retailers. Also, I've worked in a McDonalds- it doesn't matter if the ingredients are healthier. Believe me.
Actually, yes, you will find fast food in Africa. Newsflash: not every single African is starving, malnourished, and malaria/HIV-ridden. Sure, there are probably more Africans who are than in other continents, but there are PLENTY of countries and/or areas that are fairly healthy.
Yeah, that's never going to happen. Unfortunately. I'd like to consider myself somewhat of a realist, and that means I know that world peace is unfortunately almost entirely unrealistic.

You can't just throw away there stuff, if that's what they wanted to drink and eat its up to them, one of the thongs that pisses me off most about people is when they try to force there views onto other people, unfortunately that's exactly what you are doing now without realising it, what if if forced you to cohear to my views because its ben proven they are better for you, even if yoiu don't want to. If your family wasn't to eat themselves into an early grave its up to them, not to you.

I think it's great that you want to eat healthy food but the extremes are never good.
And with respect to your father, he can eat whatever he likes. You can give him an advise, period but thinking in changing your family just because you don't like what they eat doesn't sound logical.

Not to sound like a dick but actually Organic foods have been found to have more antioxidants than conventionally grown crops. Not to mention high yielding varieties which were planted around America in the early 70's aren't nearly as nutritious as their original counter parts. The seeds were known as hybrids or not pure bred. Truth be told the original crops grown before the HYV's had far more nutrients in them. That is why I love to only buy my fruits and vegetables at a local organic farm. HYV's (not to be confused with GMO's) are really only used on commercial farms to be mass produced with pesticides. Yes they are bigger and can be grown more easily but they are just not as nutritionally dense. It's like let's say a small variety of strawberries you can pick at a farm vs. those huge strawberries you'll find at the supermarket. Their not genetically modified (not a lot of fruits or vegetables are) Their just not as good for you. In conclusion though just wanted to point out that it seems more and more studies are finding that organically grown crops are safer and better for you. I will continue to post proof on this thread as it comes out.
