Shaving bikini area?

I'm 18, almost 19, and have been shaving my pubic hair for several years, mostly just because it's more comfortable (or at least to keep it trimmed). Towards the front, though, I've consistently had problems with redness and razor burn, and always have these red bumps, as well as ingrown hairs (I can never shave away the base of the hair, and it hurts a little bit to shave against the direction of the hair). In the past couple months I've gotten a product called "The Cool Fix" by Shaveworks, and it has helped a little bit, but the redness and red bumps are still definitely a problem, definitely more than I've ever had with leg hair (I very rarely have razor burn on my legs, if ever).

Does anyone have any advice about how to make the skin down there smoother and more comfortable?

Doesn't the hurt a lot though? Like a Brazilian wax? I've used wax strips before, it was all right but I feel like it came back faster than I expected it would

It stings a little, but if you do it right it won't hurt a lot.

Only ever waxed, I had the same reaction on my legs so I never even bothered on the bikini area, haven't touched a razor in years

Waxing is the best. I went to a salon a few times. I get my legs and pubes wax. It might be rough, but the end comes out way better. But keeping it smooth is the best way. I live in southern Florida and it is super hot. Most girls wear a bikini. And about 85% of us (that I see and all of the people I talk too) are smooth because it is a hassle having any hair to be shown. Some bikinis way down when they get wet and I saw it sink down low enough to see someone's small landing strip or patch. If it is all shaven, if your public hair area is shown, it is just skin and that is ok. I see a lot of girls have their bottoms all the way down to the top of their clit. So their area is smooth.
