Probably a dumb question but what do people do to get banned? Is it just inappropriate posts or what?

Read the rules (http://www.virtualteen.org/forums/faq.php), break anything listed there once or more (depending on the gravity of the rule break) and you'll get banned. It's pretty much that simple.

People can also request to be banned, people can be banned for joining overage... when it comes to rule violations, it depends on both the severity and the amount of times a particular rule has been broken, as David said.
