Hope this is the right place to post this. Anyway, I have mild Pectus Excavatum which is basically when some ribs grow abnormally inwards and I was just wondering if anybody on here has it or knows of anybody with it.

Hope this is allowed and the right place to post this. Anyway, I have mild Pectus Excavatum which is basically when some ribs grow abnormally inwards and I was just wondering if anybody on here has it or knows of anybody with it.
One of my friends has gross pectus excavatum. He can fit a fist into the groove. Besides distinctly audible heart murmurs, he hasn't got any issues whatsoever. He has been tested with ECG's and echocardiogram, which show pretty much normal function.
Another friend has a brother who also had quite severe pectus excavatum and he has ended up with surgery primarily for cosmetic reasons - his X-ray is quite impressive, with rod visible which has 'propped' his chest wall forward. He was functioning fine before surgery as well. You could fit a fist quite comfortably within the dip of his chest and he could literally eat a meal of cereal with it as a bowl!
That being said, pectus excavatum can be quite a problematic condition, with a negative impact on heart and lung function, primarily because of the space which the chest wall occupies within the thorax as a result of the dipping in of the chest. This would be one of the important main reasons for surgical correction. It is major surgery though, which is why my friend chose not to have it, given that it doesn't affect him functionally.

Heck, this doesn't sound very fun at all... Honestly, I've never even heard of this

I've seen a couple of people with pectus excavatum but I don't know them personally. I've only read about the condition, and it doesn't seem to be quite dangerous for most of the time, and I've seen only a few cases where they have cardiac malfunctions.

Thanks for the replies, it's interesting to hear what other people know about it. Apparently it affects about 1 in 500 of the population and regarding surgery what put me off it was the complexity and length of it.

i've seen someone with it but it wasn't extreme it was literally just a slightly deep line running from their chest to somewhere below their ribs or something but i've never looked into it
