Too soon to ask out?

I'm 16 and very recently I had a discussion with a rather popular girl in my year about things we find interesting/enjoyable and hobbies etc. I always assumed she was one of those stereotypical popular girl kind of things, I.e. parties e'ery day xD, but she's much more similar to me than I thought (enjoys maths, physics and is interested in CS), anyway we'd talked a little bit before and after this but I can't stop thinking how amazing she is. I feel like if I try and get to know her it'll be too forced (as we're kinda in different social groups, I'm much more introverted), but I want to ask her out.

What would you do?

Yeah, that's basically how the perfect scenario goes xD, but there's also the risk that I'm the nerd deluded into thinking the pretty girl likes me.

Literally every time I've spoken to her she's been extremely kind and nice to me; I'm wondering if it's just something she does and I'm basically attracted her formality.
