View Full Version : Why do some parents think LGBT teens can be healed?

I have no clue why so many people think LGBT teens can be healed or anything like that? I get being in disagreement with it but I doubt it needs a "cure." I have a judgemental mother, but she doesn't feel that one being homosexual, bisexual, or anything is to be cured. She sees it as unGodly but not necessarily as a reason to hate a child or render a child homeless. If I could I'd lead a campaign on how we should help homeless LGBT youth and to mend the stereotype that "certain groups of people" usually belonging under the "religious" category are against all things LGBT (the people not the organization.)
Any thoughts?

I think the majority of the people that are anti-LGBT are usually very misinformed. They grew up in an environment or time period in which being a homosexual was very taboo and they perhaps never really interacted with anyone of the LGBT community, so everything they grew up learning about homosexuality and homosexuals was purely through what others around them said, which was mostly likely bogus stuff, like homosexuality being a disease and whatnot.
My mom thinks homosexuality is an attempt to get attention or the result of being mentally ill, but I don't like to hold her opinions against her because she grew up in a very rural area, where she wasn't really exposed to other people. Of course I like to talk to her about that kind of stuff to sort of inform her, but it's hard to change someone's opinions when they've gone their whole life with that kind of mindset.

LGBTs are aberrations. Some humans have a tough time accepting any irregularity and so they try to change them, cover/conceal them or altogether eliminate them.

Homosexuality has been around around since mankind has, so to assume it's an abnormality is incorrect.
There's a lot of reasons people are against LBGTs. I think a lot of it has to do with religion and religious people. I know they don't cause all the problems, but they definitely cause a good bit of the. Nothing is wrong with being gay. It can't be "healed' because nothing is broken.

The reason some people think this is because there has been some (shoddy) evidence to support that LGBT issues such as homosexuality have been caused by psychological inferences and environmental factors. Because of this, some people believe that you can simply "reverse" the permanent affects of sexuality by conditioning arousal and changing views on gender and sex. It's a complete loads of crap though as sexuality is usually permanent.

it's not some kind of disease or something, so it doesn't need a cure. end of story.

Because they're just plain ignorant and they think homosexuality is a choice.

Some people just don't know any better or were brought up a certain way. Parents aren't immune to ignorance, unfortunately.

Most basically, I think it's just a lack of understanding and even further, a misunderstanding of what sexuality is.
