View Full Version : The Taboos of Masturbation

This is just something that came up yesterday that really threw me.
Mum came into my room, and I was playing a game (League of Legends I believe), and she asked if I was playing with friends. I told her I was playing by myself in a matchmade game. After that, she said, as long as you're not playing with yourself. Then we talked for a bit longer and she left.
It just really threw me, that masturbation is such a taboo thing. I have masturbated on and off since about age 12 (possibly younger), and have rarely been caught. I don't know why people are not more open to it, as I am sure a large percentage of people do masturbate on a regular basis.
Just a little ramble. Feedback/comments are appreciated.

My mother also looks down upon masturbation as if its something dirty. I haven't heard a lot of people talking about masturbation except for VT but i don't understand why its such a taboo topic when so many guys do it apart from it being healthy and completely normal.
I asked one of my friends once if he did it. Though he didn't say yes, he laughed a bit and said that every guy did but he seemed uncomfortable about admitting it himself.
Maybe its just that guys are shy to talk about their dicks and mbing seems like a private thing.

I also wondered about this. Maybe cause of the whole Story of Onan in the Bible?

The views of what constitutes acceptable behaviour within society shifts all the time. These differences are not so noticeable when discussed with someone within the same generation, but is glaringly obvious when discussed with someone from a different one.
How one engages with others, their expected roles and duties within society, even the subtle nuances within each ethnic culture has changed with time. Things like gender roles and how one presents this is an example. You need not look further than something as simple as clothing and apparel to also see that how we dress has changed drastically. We show far more skin now than we did in the past, for example.
Likewise, how acceptable the topic of sex is has become far more lax now than in the past. You'd never have seen the sex scenes that you do now in the movie cinemas in the past. Now, it is even broadcasted widely on daytime television. This is translatable across to masturbation also. Your mother was brought up in a time very different to ours. So the concept of self-pleasure that she has is very different to what we would have now. That's why the people on this forum discuss these things as we do, like Placid Pan mentioned:
My mother also looks down upon masturbation as if its something dirty. I haven't heard a lot of people talking about masturbation except for VT but i don't understand why its such a taboo topic when so many guys do it apart from it being healthy and completely normal.

It's important to recognise this and also to recognise what you yourself are comfortable with. At the end of the day, it's your body and own mentality you have to face; rather than that of your mother's thoughts. Hope that helps mate.

Considering masturbation actually has benefits, it shouldn't be as taboo as it is.

I don't understand why its such a taboo topic ether, my mother knows I do it. She expects it, I'm a teenager, its what I do.
Perhaps its because many of our parents where brought up in a time where wanking was sees as evil due to more religious power. Perhaps it was seen as unhygienic or dirty. Who knows, just just be happy that the taboo is slowly dieing

What, adults never masturbated as teenagers? What rock were they living under? I am very thankful to have parents who are open and supportive to the challenges of puberty, including the desire to and practice of masturbation.

my parents have never seen me do it but they know. they have said it's completely normal as long as it doesn't prevent me from doing other things

my parents say it's ok to do as long as it's done alone and behind closed doors.

Masturbation is both normal and healthy. Older generations may have been taught differently and as such think of it as something bad. Even doctors will say that it's not a bad thing. So I say go for it and don't be concerned.

People just think its dirty still i think, But everybody does it and if they say they don't they are either too young or just lying. Its natural to explore your sexual side and know how your body works.

my mom wouldn't say that to me, but i bet my dad would as a joke. i'm certain they consider masturbation a normal and healthy thing. "don't touch yourself" is just some primitive throwback type thing. Society is full of them and people don't even know why. "don't put your elbows on the table" why the fuck not? a kid I know get migraines real easily and wears a hat indoors to help prevent them. And some people get furious over wearing a hat indoors.....why? It's a throwback to some stupid medieval custom. Don't touch your weewee, don't wear a hat indoors, can't do this, can't do that. Why? Because you can't, everyone knows that.

Benefits?
+Masturbation lowers the risk of prostate cancer.
+Keeps fertility high by removing old sperm from the vas deferenes and making room for new healthy sperm.
+Is a stress reliever and a sleep aid.
+Has the benefits of intercourse without the risk of unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections/diseases.
+And last but not least, it feels good.

I don't see why it such a bad thing , Now I Rarely ever mastubate , I can count on fingers how many times Ive done it since I was 11. It is a normal thing that all teenagers do cause of raging hormones and etc. Your parents should be ok with it , they did it im sure , you're going to do it and there is nothing they can really do about it. I say do it but do it privately

You DO realize that the names of those websites alone (aside from the fact they're WEBSITES) make it highly likely that their views are incredibly biased.

Correct. In fact, about 95% of boys masturbate on a regular basis. It's not a bad thing, except for the devoutly religious or those who find it to be disgusting. Nevertheless, I agree with you, and I did even before you posted this thread. People certainly should be a bit more open to the concept of masturbation, as there seem to only be positive effects to be found from masturbation.

That's good!
On the topic, my mom also looks down on masturbation and is hurt that I do it. I know that she knows I masturbate even though shes told me before about how it's a sin and dirty. Even though I know it's a naughty thing to do, it feels so good that it's hard to stop! So basically my dad told her I can do it in my room with the door closed. So yeah it's a taboo especially after I come out of my room she always tells me to wash my hands and wipe my face since she can see my face gets a little red and sweaty.

I believe this is all because our parents are closed minded about it. I though find it natural, same thing as we eat, shit, sleep and have sex/masturbate. Be normal.

Masturbating is neither dirty or a sin! It is a normal, natural way of relieving sexual tension. It also feels amazing and produces a lot of pleasure. Enjoy the motion, the build up, and most of all the explosion. What an awesome experience. Relax and enjoy what is normal and natural.

Masturbation is not a sin, nor is it dirty. It is also not a taboo.
It is healthy, fun, and helps keep down surprise erections. Its not naughty either, especially if ur just j/o, thats the least dirtiest type in my opinion. Plus I prefer j/o to wet dreams

I am sure that is true of what happens in the public domain, i.e. how people interact in public places and what is acceptable in the media but sex is as old as people are or we would not be here and no doubt people have masturbated for as long as they have had hands.
I actually think masturbation gets hit with two levels of taboo. First there is a reluctance to talk about sexual topics in general and then second there is a reluctance to acknowledge that masturbation is a valid sexual outlet. I supose there is a view that finding someone who wants to have sex with you is a more difficult and therefore more worthy achievement than working out how to give yourself an orgasm with your hand but equally you could argue that waiting to find someone you love first is a worthwile cause and masturbation is the key to have the patience to wait for that. Either way even married men enjoy masturbating.
Personally I am not about to walk down the street shouting, or post a Facebook status saying, I have had a great wank and likewise I am not about to do the same saying what fantastic sex I have just had so, for me, there is still an element of sexual activity, including masturbation, being a private thing that I choose who I share with but equally I don't feel any need to lie and claim not to do it.
