On June 6, 1944, more than 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline, to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which, “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” More than 5,000 Ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end, the Allies gained a foot-hold in Continental Europe. The cost in lives on D-Day was high. More than 9,000 Allied Soldiers were killed or wounded, but their sacrifice allowed more than 100,000 Soldiers to begin the slow, hard slog across Europe, to defeat Adolf Hitler’s crack troops.

It's crazy to think that it's almost been over 70 years since the start of WWII. It was such a world changing event.

One of our finest hours, 5 members of my family served in D-Day and I'm sure many others did as well

Thanks for saving our freedom America! c:

On a side note, am I the only one who feels a bit bad for the German vets?: nobody seems to care that many of them made the exact same sacrifices, even if it was for a cause that a vast majority of people consider very misguided. Germany has more commemorations for fallen allied soldiers than its own.

That's because a lot of Germans despise their Nazi past.

But of course I feel for German WWII Vets. They still served their country and made insane sacrifices.
