View Full Version : Self Harm PE class solutions?

What do you do in PE class?
Is it obligatory to wear short sleaves and shorts in PE at your school?
If so, how do you hide your scars?
Did you let your teacher know so that you are allowed to wear long sleeves?
What is the best solution?

I was just honest, if people asked, I told them.
But I did hide them at first, I just told my teacher and he said I didn't have to do PE or that I could wear long sleeves

I just said "I have a problem with self harm, my arms are somewhat cut up", I shows him the wounds and asked if he could allow long sleeves.
He completely understood and allowed me to.
I did tell him that I was getting help for it as well, so he didn't freak out (I wasn't really getting help, but ohh well)

Ugggh I'm in such a dylemma.
I can't just show up in short sleeves because my arms look like I've put them in a blender.
I guess I'll have to skip this PE untill I find a solution or something... Maybe next week I'll send a confidential email to my PE teacher...
I'm not sure if I trust him to not tel anyone though,
as a matter of fact I'm not sure if I can confide something like that in anyone.

Be warned! He will have to tell someone by law. Be careful you don't drop yourself in it unless you want to. On the other hand, its a good way of letting your parents know your struggling without having to tell them. Its what I did, I told a tutor, who told my parents. Made it much easier for me.
You could simply arrive ion long sleeves and say your forgot

Ugh I guess.
This is so bad. I dont know how I could forget about this, I'm totally stressing out again.
THe thing is this is the type of teacher that is super strict in clothing and when you don't have it they have back up that you have to wear...
xXkjasdlakjdsal.
I have to skip this PE.
I'll think about the solution afterwards.

Honestly, best thing to do is figure out a way to stop. You can only hide the scars for so long. They seem to reveal themselves to people, no matter how hard you try to hide them. When I played baseball I had to use showers, which was humiliating when people could see my stomach and legs. People got extremely quiet around me and were always worried. I thought they thought I was a freak and wanted me to quit, but it was really the opposite. They were just worried and didn't know what to say.
Of course, how do you stop then? There's a list right here (http://virtualteen.org/forums/showthread.php?t=190748) on some ways to stop yourself. IMO, the best way is to take those negative emotions out in creative healthy way, like writing, drawing, painting, photography. Transform your emotional pain into something beautiful. I know that if I didn't write I'd prob be dead and art therapy definitely helped me through difficult and confusing times.
If you confront your coach about it he'll probably tell the councilors and principle. Adults are fucking stupid and don't understand anything. They think because you're young it's a phase, you're trying to get attention and young people can't understand depression. Cutting is a cycle, where once you do it, you sometimes feel ashamed for doing it and do it again because of that, or some 'i'm pathetic' feeling.. Break the cycle and realize that all the reasons you hurt yourself are complete bullshit and you're not as weak or bad as you think.
Prob didn't help much except say blablabla but anyhow, cheerio

I got some scars, and I wear t-shirt all year round, so there's nothing special there
I don't hide my scars, and I'm not going to, because it is a part of me and who I am.
A few teachers know, and I guess some have noticed them

at my school they don't mind what you are wearing as long as you wear the PE shirt that you purchase at the beginning of the year. So you can wear sweat pants with a long shirt under your t-shirt or a hoodie or zip-up of some sort. the only problem is when you get a sweat going or when it's really hot.

Well if it's your wrists, a lot of people I know who cut wear a ton of wrist bands to cove them up. (punk way of doing it) lol

i never hid it in gym. nobody noticed. i even had scars on my chest and when we had pool no one noticed. once the cuts were new and i skipped pool but when they were on my wrist, no one noticed. It might just be my school though. id say put on make-up over it. not too much though.
Come to think of it. no one noticed when i self harm at school either...

Okay thanks for the input everyone.
Something like make up or wrist bands won't help,
simply because it's scars running from my wrists to my shoulders, so yea.
I skipped PE today.
Sigh I guess I'll just try to wear like a jacket over it next time, even though it's hot.
Also, I'd think they wouldn't notice too, but I know they do because they noticed with another self harmer, etc.

are you allowed to wear arm socks because they make some that are made specifcally for working out and those would cover them

Personally I wear a long sleeved thermal under my compulsary short sleeved PE shirt. People tell me I'm crazy seeing as it's summer but I'm pretty much known for being cold so they don't really go on about it. I also wear leggings underneath my school trousers and roll them up for PE and put my shorts over the top so it looks like I have tight shorts on under my baggy PE shorts - this means my thigh scars are never shown (if you have scars on your thighs there are stretchy shorts for boys that might be useful?). I don't suppose the teacher can say anything about something UNDERNEATH the PE shirt, I mean I know some are really strict on jumpers but I've never had to take off my thermal. Maybe buy a really thin one out of some light material so that you're not too hot but it's probably the best idea I've had and it's worked out pretty well for me. Hope that helps you out a little.
Also if anyone asks about it say you have eczema or something like that, that you're self conscious about and don't want to show. I'm sure the teachers will be more understanding of that kind of excuse as well, let's hope so anyway, and the kids will be lead off from believing it's self harm.

Well, my scars are actually pretty high up my leg si they are covered in my boxers, same for the ones on my arm, they are still covered by the short sleeve, so I don't have any trouble hiding them.

in my school we wear long baggy pants for PE and a compulsory t-shirt. we're allowed to use a jackets, but when it gets too hot I just wear tons of bracelets up until my forearm. I think people kinda know why but they've never asked. Maybe you can talk alone with your PE instructor and either tell him the truth or make something up. idk.

I agree, something under the gym shirt might be your best bet. Something light though. I always wear sweaters or light hoodies, and I claim that I'm always a bit chilly - even in PE it worked alright.
I think there are worse people to tell, and I think because of your age, he can't tell without your consent - I know where I live in PA, it's 14, it'd be pretty easy to find a number for your state.

Alright, thanks everyone :)
I'm not sure if I should tell... I'll think about it.
Also I have no idea what law that is or how that would work in my country /:
I'll see.
Thanks
