This afternoon, at 11:50 or so, I was doing my driving test, the final one. I was planning to pick up my friend Harris and to go fishing together. During the test, at 11:57 sharp. My phone rang. Stopped and answered.. It was my close friend of Harris and I, Ben. His words were straight to the point.
"Harris was involved in an accident today. Engine number 7" (1927 Baldwin Locomotive Works 0-4-0) "He wanted to fire it up for you, being your birthday and all. Well, he won't be. Around eleven fifty this after', number 7 blew her crown sheet. The resulting explosion scalded Harris, killing him instantly. I tried to get him before it blew entirely, but it was too late. I got thrown back out of the engine shed, i'm a little scarred up, but I'll be okay. We found him flat inside the cab. I dunno what's going to become of this. He left a note for you, saying to meet him on the first BBL trestle. I, uh, figured you would want to know.. Well, gotta go, bye."
Boy, this has been a rough month... I ended up calling the lesson off, until I feel up to trying again. I'll sure miss him.. Hope he was already gone before he was hit bad... I can't imagine what that was like. I may not be around for a while, need some time to gather my thoughts I guess.

That is surreal. I can't even imagine what you're going through right now. I'm sure Harris lived a good life, but it's always horrifying when a life is cut short. I wish that I could give so much more support to you, but I honestly don't know what to say.
R.I.P Harris, your friends love and miss you.

Found the whole story today.. Engine number 7, Boston and Maine Central 'Sally May', was the last engine we saved together. Being my birthday, he wanted to make me happy by driving it to my shed while I was getting ready for the afternoon. He apparently had planned to take me instead. Sally had been found abandoned in a logging yard just outside of Alfred, ME. Apparently, the firebox crown sheet had been weakened by many years of rust. When he fired the boiler, it built too much pressure and burst a hole. 200 gallons of water at 100PSI instantly turned to a much higher number as the hole burst. From the look of it, he was in the driver seat ready to move when it happened. Ben says his hand was on the whistle. We had worked endlessly on that engine to get it ready for Ron, who has also passed away two years ago now. I guess that old locomotive was a bad luck token.. I think it's a blessing in disguise it's gone for good.. all that remains now is an iron shell and half the cab. Later that day, the shed burnt down around it. Still dunno what will happen now. This is the tail end of the Bluebell Railway now. I can not even imagine what that must have felt like.. stuck in the seat when that bomb went off. tonight we're on the hunt for his final wishes, (Yes, we all wrote wills to each other.. We all have our problems.. should anything happen.)
This'll probably be my last night for a while now. With him gone, plus all the things that will be going on due to so, AND the fact that the summer rush is starting.. I'll be working off my feet to keep up with the work. He was the best thinker and driver, (And redneck repairer) I ever knew.. We did a lot of things together.. Practically grew up side by side. Same age, same model, same mentality. I'll really miss him.
Stepney.
By the Way, he got his name due to the fact we were both born in Harrison, ME.
