Yep. The title says it all. I turned on my TV, turned on my Xbox, played for about 5 minutes, went to get some food out o the fridge, come back, sit down, and the TV makes a hissing noise and some smoke came out of the back. Now I have to face my dad and tell him about this when he gets home... Is there any chance that it can still work, or am I screwed?

I don't think he's going to be mad at you. It wasn't your fault. Or if your scares he will be, just leave it off and pretend that you havent used it and you have no idea.
And if its pouring smoke, it's likely screwed. Trust me, I'm an engineer, you don't want to use it if its smoking. There are a hole host of possible dangers, likely a burning insulator or a during capacitor. Both are unsafe to mess with. Just leave the TV alone and don't mess with it.
TV's aren't too expensive these days. I got a 32 inch 1080p on for £100 ($150) second hand.

It is the only TV in the house, I am pretty sure he will notice. He could be mad, mostly because we would have to buy another TV, and we are slightly broke right now... We have a little one sitting around that I can use for the rest of today, but I really want to see if this one can still work. It isn't pouring smoke, but it just puffed the once... I tried turning it on, and it displayed start-up, and then died shortly after...

Right. If its just a single puff. That means that the chances are a Capacitor has blown out. They are easy to get repaired, shouldn't be too expensive to fix. Its like 20 mins work tops if it is a blown capacitor.
Do NOT turn it on again till you get it fixed, if it is a blown cap, that could cause over or under voltage in another part of the system and cause more damage. Just leave it and explain what happened. He can't be mad at you since it wasn't your fault.

Dont lie to your dad just let him know you switched the TV on and there is something wrong with it.
:metal:
Hopefully your Dad will organise a repair.

Well, I looked around a bit. It would be cheaper and easier to just get a new TV...
