Hello, I'm a Belgian pupil who had the assignment for my English classes to conversate with a Ukrainian kid, but... that didn't worked out as it was meant to be. (probably because of the "war" over there) :(
So I thought why not subsribing to this forum to talk a bit of English! :metal:

By doing this there are a few things I want to learn about:
First of all, how is school in your country? (Do you like/dislike, what about your teachers/meals/uniforms...)
Secondly, do you have something other that I may want to know about you/your country/randomstuff?

Of course you can always ask me some questions as well :)

Hi!

Are you from the Dutch or the French part of Belgium?

School in my country (The Netherlands): We don't have to wear uniforms, we don't have meals at school, you just bring your own food (most of the time bread).
Most teachers are pretty nice and the student-teacher relationship is informal. :)

Something about my country: It's next to yours :D

Well, like a lot of people on this forum, I am from The United States of America.
Schools here are...let's face it...kind of sucky and we are best known for sucking globally in math and science compared to prodgies in China and Japan.

From the Dutch part :) I live in Vilvoorde near Brussels.
The irony! I visit this website to speak English and the first person who reacts is someone who actually speaks the same language as I do

Your situation is more or less the same as mine and most (the exception is our French teacher) of the teachers are also nice :P

Are there many non-native speakers on this forum?

But I think that most of the schools can't reach the level of these superior schools!
We read a text about them in the English class which says that the school work pressure is very hard, that everybody competes with eachother and that they almost have no leisure time...
I don't know if it's true but if that's the case I prefer the western school system Ithink :)

No uniforms, everything pretty chill. I have some problems with alot of teachers but I guess I just have problems with accepting authority

Sup buddy.
I live in the UK. The schools are terrible. They are fullnof so many rules and regulations it just makes life awkward and uncomfortable.
The student teacher relationship is "do as I say, do it my way, I hate you". Because they are not allowed to be friends with the pupils. They are basically forced to be dicks by the government...

The uniforms, awfull. Compulsory, look bad, expensive, hard to clean. And they are very strict about them, tie up. Shirt tucked in, shoes black and clean, so on and so forth. General bullshit like that.
And the Meals, well, if you want to live. Don't eat them, bring your own food. They say " we searv healthy meals", what they actually mean is "we can't afford decent food".
Basically schools in the UL are not a nice experience.

Anyway, welcome to VT, hope you enjoy your time here! :)

Thank you all for the warm welcome! I'm usually not that kind of social person but here everyone is so friendly. I really appreciate.
At first I planned to use this forum only for my assignment but now I'm really thinking about keeping posting after the school year :)

The describing of your school sounds like a prison  Is it really so bad?
In comparing to your school, mine sounds like paradise (well euhm, as far as school can be a paradise of course :P ) No uniforms in Belgium (there are some schools with uniforms but not many) and the relation between students and teachers is also not that bad :)

Are most of the school in the UK like this or are there also exceptions?

I hear the waffles in Belgium are spectacular. Is this true? :D

I'm from the state of Texas in the southern section of the US by the way.

I think you're well informed :P
Especially the waffles of Brussels (that's just the name of the waffle, you can find it also in the rest of Belgium) with some icing sugar and a lot of crème fraiche.
It's difficult to eat without making your T-shirt a little bit dirty but it tastes delicious!

Welcome Belgian neighbor. :D
the French educational system is the same in Belgium i think..

To compare with UK

French pupils don't have to wear uniform
They are allowed out of school at lunch time
They eat differently at lunch time - they don't take in sandwiches, they often eat a large lunch at home.
They have more homework than us
They have less days of schools and more holidays
They learn English in Primary
They have to buy all their own materials and sometimes their textbooks too
They generally have Wednesday afternoons off,.
The school day is longer - they start at 8 normally & lessons can go on til 5
They have different exams - they don't do GCSE & A Levels.

What about Belgium ?

Bonjour mon ami! (I have to practice because friday I have my oral exam of french :P )

You could say that our educational systems are pretty much the same.

The only two differences are that it is more common for us to stay at school during the lunch. It is allowed but only if you have the permission of your parents.
And secondly, We start learning English in secondary school. The only foreign language we learn in primary school is French. ;)

Btw, spoken about French, it makes me think about this situation. We went to Lille with School to improve our French and just when we are about to take a photo of our group, we heard a man constantly shouting "whiskiky, whiskiky". (He was obviously drunk)
He came to us and so, eventually we got a picture of this school trip with a drunk man in the middle :P
We made a lot of fun that day :D

Bonne chance pour ton examen oral ;)

Introductions  Education and Careers

This is really more of a discussion about school than it is an intro thread.
