I have the iPhone 5c and I really like it, but in general the 5s is nicer (we were getting 4 phones so we couldn't afford the 5s), but I don't know if iPhones really are the nicest phone.

Personally I think android is better... It's just a better experience in my opinion but the iPhone 5S is really sick as well. I like the clean design of the iPhone but I like more the freedom of android phones.

Personally I would not recommend Apple products, they force you to buy everything through them, and all your music/apps.data is hard to get off the phone. There's lots of DRM and bullsh*t to deal with around Apple. However they are superb design and build quality. And your phone will be outdated within a year and Apple with fuck you in the a*s first chance they get.
Droid is better in my opinion as you can port all MP3's over easily. Data is free and easy to mover around. They are less evil (Sort of...damn you Google). They are a LOT cheaper. And I mean a LOT. However, Droid is not the be-all and end-all of phones. They have downsides as well.
Its all up to you in the end, what do you want, a simple, slightly idiot proof phone that's nice to use and has great quality. Or do you want an open source phone that's not full of DRM bullsh*t, mostly. Ether way, welcome to the land of the smartphone!
Ether way, I would reccomend:
- For Apple: iPhone 5/5s
- For Android: Nexus 5/Samsung S4
Ether way, enjoy your new phone!

I personally much prefer Android over Apple and I've never been a fan of the Samsung configuration.
I have an HTC One which is amazing but if you want something slightly more modern I suggest the HTC One M8.

There's 3 routes you can go nowadays: Apple, Android, and Windows Phone
-APPLE: iphone, they're all the same, and it's solid, simple, and easy to use, but you are stuck with apple's decisions about how you can get your content, and all their services and stuff. It can get annoying, but generally, Apple makes decent software and performing products. They also copy a lot of things from Android and other companies. :/
5c (http://www.gsmarena.com/apple_iphone_5c-5690.php) - plastic iphone 5
5s (http://www.gsmarena.com/apple_iphone_5s-5685.php) - iphone 5 plus fingerprinty thing
6 4.8 TBA (2014) bigger iphone
6 phablet TBA (2014) Bigger than bigger iphone
Here's some iPhone 6 Rumors (http://www.macrumors.com/roundup/iphone-6/)
-Android: Several brands, each customizing the android interface for their own competing features. Android at it's core is basically Linux. It's powerful, very customizable, and the spread across the market allows competition and more innovative and interesting things in the devices. I am an android fan. It's just like a little computer in your pocket. Slightly harder to get used to for a first device, but once you do, you'll be able to utilize all the power from your device and grow to think of iphones as toys XD.
This years flagships are:
-Samsung Galaxy S5 (http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s5-6033.php)
-HTC One M8 (http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_one_(m8)-6074.php)
-LG G3 (http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_g3-6294.php)
-Google Nexus 5 (http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_nexus_5-5705.php)
-Sony Xperia Z2 (http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_z2-6144.php)
All of these are amazing powerful phones and I think you'll love them :)
Windows Phones aren't good don't get them. I'm sorry but it's kinda true XD
It would help to know what service provider you intend to use. Also what will you use your phone for? How will you use it? What do you want in a smartphone?

Galaxy Nexus. over two years and it still owns.
I'd like it even more if it had removable storage, but hey, you win some you lose some.

Well if you want to upgrade memory and have apps that you would pay 99 cents for on Apple, I'd recommend something from the Android brand.

Don't get an iPhone if you like to customize things. If I were you, I'd wait for a new Nexus phone, or get HTC One M8 (if you can afford it).

Go for iPhone or a Windows 8 Nokia, whenever I buy an Android, it gets laggy and crashy after six months. I keep all the unnecessary stuff turned off, but it's just pure garbage afterwards.

A Nokia 3310 takes up less space then those smartphones, even when I put my MP3 player for music, but it's sooo indestructible. My friend threw it at me, it hit me in the head (probably lowered my IQ from 115 to 95) and hit the concrete floor afterwards. It was like brand new. Try doing that with a Samsung Galaxy S series or an iPhone. Also, a fun fact for all you people, the dinosaurs were not killed by a meteor, they were killed by a Nokia 3310 dropped from an airplane.

custom ROMs are a must with Android. I'm running a custom Kitkat ROM and kernel, and I get great battery life and no laggage.

The thing is about iPhones is that for the high price it is, you can get an equivalent Android phone with 15+ more features. The LG G2 (I hear the G3 is coming out soon) and the Samsung Galaxy S5 are pretty good phones right now. Here's a list of the top 10 smartphones (http://www.stuff.tv/smartphones/top-ten) rated by tech experts.
You can always use Phone comparison websites (http://phonerocket.com/compare-smartphones) as well to find the best phone for you.

iPhone's are beautiful phones and some of the most secure against malware. Go with the 5S, unless you can wait a few months. If you don't need it immediately, wait for the 6 to come out.

iPhone's are great phones! Very easy to use & has great features. I'm not an android user so I can't give you any suggestions for Android. I have the 32gb 5s & it's great! My only complaint is that the battery life kinda sucks so I have to keep a charger in my car, but other than that, it's a great phone! :-)

iPhones look nice and feel nice, but you just miss all the freedom Android offers.
But that's just me, I like to root and flash custom ROMs on my phones. Possibilities are nearly infinite: from changing every part of the interface to overclocking the CPU. You can't do that on iPhone.
And I'd avoid Samsung, I just don't like what they've done to recovery and overall design, both physical and TouchWiz interface. So my advice is: Sony or Nexus phone (flagships are Xperia Z2 and Nexus 5, but there are cheaper ones if you're out of money).

That's why I'm getting a Windows 8 Nokia. My friend told me the low tier ones fare a bit better then the Androids, he owns both. I only need it for calls, messages, music and a camera for random moments, but having a Nokia 3310 and an MP3 player is equally useful.
