View Full Version : Cut guys at private schools??

Hey all, so I've kind of thought about this a little and just wanted some opinions; I went to a public primary school and almost ALL of the guys were uncut and generally speaking the average student's family were of lower socio-economic background.
I go to a more 'prestigious' high school (they like to say) and I've noticed that the trends are literally the exact opposite in that almost everyone IS cut...and the average family is upper class...idk if it's just a coincidence but could any of you shed some light on your experiences? Both were NSW Australian schools too...
AND BEFORE ANYONE MAKES ANY ACCUSATIONS I'M NOT INSINUATING FOR A SECOND IF YOU ARE UNCUT THAT YOU ARE DISADVANTAGED IN ANY WAY, I just thought I'd bring the topic up and see what people thought :)
Cheers :D

I'm in NSW too. I go to a catholic school on the central coast, and it's generally true. I too went to a public primary school. I think the reason is, circumcision used to be covered by Medicare till about 6 years ago, when they considered the procedure to be 'cosmetic' and won't pay for it unless doctors sign off to say that it is medically required. But even before then, in the public health system, only around half of the doctors would do it (for whatever reason, either not qualified or it might have been a conscious thing) but also, you know what hospitals are like here. Always busy and over-crowded. Most public hospitals wouldn't offer it unless parents insisted because they simply didn't have the time. And even before Medicare stopped covering it, you had to get it done within a few weeks from birth because after a certain point (I think Medicare considered it to be six months) the risk factors associated with circumcision multiplied by ten fold, and Medicare wouldn't cover it. Most of the kids that got it done back then, were usually born to kids who's mothers had private health insurance. Especially in the last six years, it has become a socio-economic thing. Having said that, my father flat out said it was not to happen, despite my mother and her obstetrician recommending it (probably for money).

i guess in that part of Australia for the class of people who think themselves prestigious it's considered posh to have your boy circumcised. interesting.

That doesnt make sense to me cause circumcision is the procedure so the poor shouldn't afford it if $ had anything to do with it. But my town was poor and all in my class were indeed uncut i believe. No idea why this is. It was too repressed for guys to talk of such things and the parents never explained it.

It is most probably the parents thought it " looked better"

Always an interesting question. I am circumcised. Several years ago I asked my dad about why I was circumcised. He claimed it was tradition from our past generations. (British background). He said that they stopped *paying* for it here in Canada under our
medicare system. Thus he had to pay $150 to get it done. After reading the attached link it made me understand a bit more. I would say that we are quite a bit better off than most and seems that there are more circumcised boys in my area than other neighbourhoods. Not sure whether it really has any bearing on anything.

To ddbumblebee. Sorry, maybe to answer your question yes in private school you will most likely see more cut guys than not. In my experience there are a few Asians who are not cut as there are a few N.A. guys. Maybe as dad says 'older money' families. The Brits that attend my school all seem to be cut and one aussie guy as well. Is there a real reason I have no idea really. There are very few uncut guys I know of in my school as I have seen. I'm not sure what it is like in other countries tho.

Casperathome, I grew up in Van and in my public schools most were uncut, but we were part of the liberal university crowd, not really old money. I had read about this old money, upper class effect and thought maybe it was nonsense, but from what you and ddbumblebee say, maybe there is something to it.

Cheers everyone for your replies and yeah looks like a bit of a trend, it's interesting if anything and yeah Tapdancer I thought that as well, maybe now that medicare doesn't cover it the trend will pretty much cease soon...
Beefcake yeah my school is religious but the majority of the student body are actually just wealthy atheist families so not sure if religion has a specific part to play but yeah it is a possibility :)
Stellord that's what I was saying that the public school kids generally are not cut, maybe because of the money factor but medicare use to cover it for my age group so it sort of doesn't apply to the situation...
But yeah cheers everyone again :)))

There might be a correlation, or maybe Australians are just weird... I don't know :)

I go to a private school in the US and all the guys here are cut but we have a higher circumcision rate even in the public schools than most countries. But circumcision is probably a bit of a status symbol.

I remember a posting in another forum by an Aussie. His mother had him circumcised
at the age of 13, when he was about to enter a private school for the first time. He believed
her reason was simply snobbery, that she and her family would be considered low class
if he was not cut.

Hey,
I am from Germany, but spent a couple of summers abroad. It is true in the US there are quite a few boys cut and in Canada on the other side most uncut, my cut dick was a looker... well I got changed in our cabin at camp without trying to cover myself up... I do not bother much about stuff like that.
In Germany I am pretty sure it is not a money thing, either it is religious or medical.
