I've recently finished watching an anime called Sword Art Online. This anime focuses its plot on the events of an inescapable game world where real death it everywhere. As the story progresses, many characters become used to their virtual lives. Many stop working towards the completion of the game, and thus escape. SAO got me thinking.

If you are offered a chance to be taken to a dream world where anything is possible as long as you work towards it, but with little chance of return...do you join the new world and leave behind those that you know? Or do you stay and live out the rest of your life here instead?

In the middle-class, we are capable of getting anything we want, as long we work hard for it and some luck.

Unless, of course, I could be born again w/o aspergism and/or as a girl. If so... new reality all the way!

I meant a world where anything is possible. You know, where you could do anything as long as you had the strength and the will. Where you can make something of yourself without birth traits getting in the way. I would leave this life in an instant, given the chance.

Do I want to live in the Matrix? No.

Do I want to live in the Matrix? No.

I feel the same, haha. I would hate that concept. That everything I was doing was fake and meaningless. O_o

Of course! In this life there are homeless people who are way better people than I am, way harder workers than I am, and much smarter than I am! At the same time, there are also famous and rich people who are much worse people than me, lazier people than me, an less intelligent than I am (IMHO). So yes, I would like to see where I could end up in such a world.

I'd think it's pretty cool.

I wanna be in a dream world where anything is possible when others work for it! It should have dragons!

I want to stay in reality.

It is better to live in the real world than to persist in a fantasy, no matter how satisfying it may be.

You all assume that the other world would be a worthless fantasy. Others who made the choice would be there, as well. Your life would persist in that world, but cease in this one. Therefore you wouldn't be experiencing a fantasy. Reality is relative. (The explanation through SAO simply explained what got me thinking. Not the mechanics of the world)

Here's an example. Suppose that there was another dimension besides ours. If someone from that dimension crossed into our world, anything they did here would (for the most part) have no effect on their world. That wouldn't make their life here a fantasy, it would still be reality. is this a better explanation?

I agree completely. I just like this plane of existence. :P

I strongly disagree. Because of laws and the way society is set up, as well as genetics and biology, the world we live in is fixed in a loop where the strong only get stronger. Then there's our world's rather disheartening laws of nature. The possibilities are really very narrow.

Maybe as a society yes but as an individual anything is possible

Not really, since every individual is part of a society.

But in that world, "anything is possible" according to the question. I prefer to remain in this world that is ruled by the laws of nature.

I'd stay because my vision is to change the world, and I can't do that elsewhere.

If it offered more than our current world? More than likely yes.

By the way, the next season of SAO is coming out soon, it's going to based on the manga. PM me if you wanna talk about anime ever :P

Without a doubt, yes. Eluding the obvious reasons of having an existence much more exciting than this one (...or at least thought to be in this reality), physically transitioning from one reality to another would be incredible. I often imagine living in other realities and it has always intrigued me. Even living in this reality would be exciting enough if you could travel through linear time.
