Through an escalating tale of illness, luck, determination, not falling over and jumping high i have managed to get my self stuck doing the 400 Meter Sprint Hurdles for my County in Wales (Flintshire) and i have 1 problem...I have not even attempted any Hurdling ever until i won the qualifier last week!

So your thinking ''Well, you won, what are you worried about?''. I am worried because when i won the qualifiers it was 50% to do with good running, not jumping and 50% to do with everyone else falling over. Now my school is making me do the exact same event for the entire county, against the best Hurdlers in the whole of North Wales, in an event i had not even heard of until my Teacher threw a number on my chest because our schools Hurdler decided to get constipated and couldn't run.

Since then i have been to precisely 1 Athletics Lesson which taught me how to jump over without wobbling like a man on stilts when i land, and the Event is now in two days

Can anyone help me, i have decided to go, and lose terribly, but get a day off school and maybe...just maybe, a participation trophy  but could anyone give me any tips on the 400 Meter Hurdles as if you where talking to a two year old? Cause all that occurs to me is run fast and don't run into the Hurdles.

Thanks

Just do your best mate. You can't ask anything more of yourself if you do.
Good luck!

Good luck! That's pretty cool that you won the qualifier without ever trying hurdling before. Congrats :P

You have a natural talent - and others will be the same - not much if any practice

May the best man win - you

I'd just focus on clearing every hurtle and running your race...don't worry about the other runners. You never know, they could fall too.

Also you may want to save a bit of energy for the final 100m because you'll still have a few hurdles to go but your legs will be burnt.

Thanks guys, i took your advise and just gave it a go.

It ended up being a great day, spending a day out of school with my friends (convenient how most of the 'sporty' people in my year are also on my Rugby Team :) ) in the rare Welsh Sun. The event itself was very tiring, a lot more so then the qualifiers. I don't know why, it was the same track, but the competition was much harder and i had to run a lot faster. Something definitely 'clicked' in me during the run and i ran the fastest i have, beating my previous 400m flat time! I ended up coming first in my heat, but second over all due to the person who came first in the other run had a faster time.

I was happy with this, because in my run and i was second the entire way, struggling over the first few hurdles. Then i realized instead of jumping *over* the hurdles i should be jumping *across* and then caught up, like in Rugby when someone is running just in front of you, so you run faster so make that tackle. There wasn't a final against the winners from the other heat due to time, so they went off time which gave me second. I don't get to go onto the national Atheistic unless the person who came first somehow dies, but i don't mind. Exams are more important.

Thanks guys for the support.
