Okay, so when you go to the doctor for a yearly check up or whatever, what are they feeling for when they touch your balls and make you turn and cough?

That is a hernia exam. What they are checking you for is if you have a puncture in the abdominal wall. And coughing forces the hernia out and allows the doctors to feel around for it.

Think they check for signs of ball cancer

he rolls my balls around looking for tumors, then he sticks his finger against my groin under the ball sack and tells me to cough. if i have a hernia, he will feel it bulge out when i cough.

During these appointments, the doctor should check for the presence of hernias. Hernias are basically when one part of the body enters into another area where it should not. Embryologically, the testes are actually located within the abdomen and slowly descend downwards into the scrotum. The passage they follow is the inguinal canal. Sometimes, if there is a defect, it can allow a bit of bowel to descend down this canal towards the scrotum. The coughing during the exam helps increase the pressure within the abdomen, to help potentially unmask the presence of a hernia.

In addition, they will screen for potential testicular masses, like tumours, cysts, or enlarged veins within the scrotum. At the same time, they'll likely ask about sexual history to screen for potential STD's. The actual exam ends in no time at all. No need to worry about it at all mate.

WRONG!

"...Hernias develop in the abdomen, when a weakness in the abdominal wall evolves into a localized hole, or "defect", through which adipose tissue, or abdominal organs covered with peritoneum, may protrude"

So you'd say that brain herniation occurs from the abdomen too? Afraid not.
In this particular case, DontFckThisUp is asking about what kind of examination occurs when attending the doctor for a physical. So it is in reference to herniation of abdominal origin. But this doesn't mean that herniation only occurs from within there, as per my given example.

Actually Cloud_Strife is right. :P Hernias can be lots of places. For example you can get them in your groin or upper abdomen. It's kind of a generic term.
