Key word: economy. We ain't talking about Tesla's here, but we are talking about electric vehicles like the Chevy Volt, Nissan LEAF, Toyota Prius plug-in, and so on. I mention this because the range difference between the $80k Tesla and the $35k Nissan is quite huge - the economy cars carry a much shorter range.

Would you buy one, lease one, rent one, or never touch an EV?

Personally, I love my LEAF. It gets decent range for city driving, but it has enough juice to make it up to the city and back if I park it at a charging station and take the train into downtown. It works for me, but I don't know if I'd own one as I might be moving down south soon and will have much longer commutes. Maybe in the future when the ranges improve for the lower cars (im not ever going to buy a tesla sorry) and the supercharger network expands I'll consider buying a LEAF.

Nope I wouldn't. maybe in the city they would work but most big cities have public transportation. I live too far away from anything and everything for something like that to be practical.

My ideal car runs on diesel...

I plan to live like my father: only the car when it's an absolute must and when you can afford something close to what you want. I, like my father, need something 4x4. Anything alcohol or electricity doesn't interest me the slightest.

For my first car? Nah. There's no way I could afford one.

Might makes sense to rent first see how you like it then buy if you can.

Not for eveyone by preference or practicality but nothing is.

Doesn't get enough range for what I use as a car.
It's too impractical for me, because the city is 50km from here, plus driving around the city, it would be cutting it too fine.

If economy was #1, I'd buy a Ford Focus Econetic Diesel.

Maybe......Who am I kidding? No way! I gotta have a huge gas-guzzler that throws Benjamins out the window when you drive away. I love trucks.

I'll probably never be able to afford one, sooo...

Right now, I don't do a TON of driving, so a super efficient vehicle isn't really needed for the amount that I drive. As long as the car isn't a super-duper gas-guzzler, then I'd probably make by fine.

I know right - they have amazing capabilities with their technology but don't make it affordable to the lower-income families :(

it's easy enough to steal one. The people would just go buy another.

I'd drive a 1909 Detroit Electric.. but that's it. Maybe a 1920's Red Bug. I hate new cars...

Depends on my actual needs.

If I live a short way from work or a city centre then probably yes but if I lived a long way away and required regular use of a vehicle then I probably wouldn't as battery life isn't too great yet.

I would buy whatever car I can afford. Which is none of them right now. :P

Pffff get real electric cars. I think most of the gear heads on this site will agree that electric cars are an insult and just make cars out of line. Its like the automatic vs manual debate. People claim automatics don't give the real driving experience.

And honestly what is cooler? the buuzzzzzzzzzzzz coming from a prius or the nice rumble of a corvette? Ummm I pick corvette. I don't believe electric cars are real cars. Plain and simple!! Oh your "saving the world" well yeah maybe, but until I pass you at 85mph in my parents escalade because your going 50 on the open highway and there is a trail of 3 cars bumper to bumper cause they are pissed at your lollygagging!!!

I get what you're saying. I, for one, am definitely not light on the gas pedal (though it really does start to suck up the juice at 75) but I can still get around to where I need to go. I'm not saying I would replace it with a sports car, because the electric cars are for a much different market - they're made to be a more economical and (in the long run cheaper) alternative to internal combustion engine cars. Most of the buyers go in knowing that their car has a maximum speed of about 90-100 MPH, and that's fine with them if it means saving a few hundred bucks on Gasoline or diesel. If you want to compare electric to a sports car, you can't compare a Prius to a Corvette as they have much different target groups. Try comparing it to a Tesla instead.

Ahem, you mean try comparing it TO Mr. Tesla? Hehehe....
