Why is gay and for that matter bisexuality, such a big deal? Its a sexual preference. People dont just come out straight. Why is sexuality such a big deal when we have more important things ij the world?! I think relatiinshups should just be personal. Gay is seen as Controversy. Look at russia and how the homphobic bigots are running the country. Conchita Wurst, amazing man/woman who stood up for gay rights in the eurovison contest. What are your feelungs on this?

There is big hype over it, probably because of how it's demanding equal rights in many places atm. With time I hope that coming out is just a minor thing and that it's not a major event if your'e one thing or the other.

It's because of religion. We live in a culture of Heteronormativity, and people would rather consider that the default than acknowledge all the other sexual preferences.

It's ignorant and discrimination!

Because for centuries, it has been seen as taboo or a mental illness. It is only recently becoming socially acceptable. Plus, our media and culture is used to being heteronormative. That's why it's seen as a big deal, and it's stupid. It hasn't always been this way (see the ancient Greeks) but ever since Christianity came along, well...

It seems that all around the world people have difficulty accepting anyone or anything that is different from them and their experiences. Most people just take the attitude of Oh Well, that's not me and move on. However, there are those who would be god and make everyone over in their own image. So they become haters.
I don't think being gay or bi is a choice. I believe we are born with that orientation. I did not choose to have bi leanings, but I do. I have struggled with it for months and have only recently found peace of mind. I live in a very homophobic state and know I have to be careful. I did not choose to be bi, I am an I accept that as a fact. God made me they way I am.

As already said it's difficult for people to accept things they are not experienced with, that are different in one way or the other.
There have always been groups of people that were kinda outcast due to certain factors...homosexuals are just one of them... I guess some people just need to do that, to feel better, dunno...
I never really understood the whole concept myself, to be honest.

PS, I just googled Conchita Quest as I've never heard of her...awesome :)

Religion.

Mostly this.

Religion gave non-heterosexuality the reputation it has/had, and is still trying to get rid of. It's also partly attributed to ignorance. Some people who are against homosexuality can't give any more specific reasons than "because it's wrong" or because "man was made to mate with woman." It's pretty sad, and I can't believe it's still going on, but times are changing. Slowly but surely.

It's a big deal because it shouldn't be a deal at all.

Because ignorant red necks living in the bible only use the parts of the bible that benefit them. They always quote Leviticus when actually, Leviticus is not talking about homosexuality. This post on Tumblr pretty much sums it up.
"I spoke with my cousin’s rabbi on the matter and his response was different, saying that it was a mistranslation. See, the true translation says that a man shall not lie with another in the bed of a woman, which is to say, the Hebrews had a shit ton of rules about when a man was or was not allowed in a woman’s bed and private quarters (including, if she didn’t want you there, you weren’t allowed there. Hebrew women were also allowed to divorce their husbands and the image of the ‘oppressive Hebrew people’ is an image that was propogated by Christianity which, historically speaking, doesn’t treat the Jewish people too well and liked to paint them as being rather barbaric and backwards and cultish with their traditions, which, another piece of fun info, their traditions were one of the main reasons why the Jewish people were less likely, in medieval times, to die of the plague. Because washing your hands and avoiding the dead and vermin and the like was a lot of help. Of course the Christians persecuted them for not dying but that’s another matter. I’m sidetracked). So the verse is literally saying ‘Don’t fuck in some lady’s bed because that’s just goddamn rude’
Also, whenever a Christian brings the book of Leviticus up, you should feel free to point out that these are rules that were given to make the Hebrew people prepared for when the son of God came to earth. In Christianity, it’s believed the son of God was Jesus. So by following the rules set in Leviticus or pushing them as things we should follow, they’re saying that Jesus was not the son of God, and that Jesus did not, in fact, die for our sins. Jewish people believe, in their faith, that the son of God hasn’t yet been born, so many choose to follow these rules.
Most people of course roll their eyes when I explain the translation of the verse (full breakdown found here) but it’s always fun to point out the nature of the rules in Leviticus and the implications of following them."

The world is still heteronormative and it really sucks but times are changing and hopefully in a couple of generations the world will be more balanced out?

how is that a bad thing? heterosexuality ("heteronormativity"?) has always been the norm.

That made me sound rather heterophobic (is that a word?). I was trying to suggest that there shouldn't be a 'normal' sexual orientation.

Like other have said I reckon most of the issues come from religious beliefs.
Our society unfortunately still wants people to be a certain way, then it makes everything neat and tidy.
The majority is still heterosexual and they cant understand that some people are just not like them, unfortunately.
Its much better today than say 100 years ago.
It takes a long time for some things to be accepted, but we are getting there.
People just need to have something to fight against, peoples sexuality is still one of them.

People would still be homophobic even without religion. Some people could never understand it because it is not in them. Then there are those who are self haters, and they are the worst because they hate themselves so much for having gay feelings that they take it out on anyone that is open about it. I think the biggest homophobes are self hating gays. Anyone that is a christian should be accepting and treat gays just as they would treat everyone else. Everyone has issues in there life, Jesus shows over and over he will love you no matter who you are.
