The EU has put two more Slovenian products, a smoked and dried ham from north-
eastern Slovenia and salt from the Slovenian coast, on the list of traditional EU-
protected food products. This increases the number of protected Slovenian items to
21.
Prekmurska šunka, a smoked and dried ham
made from a fresh hind leg of pork in the area
of Prekmurje in north-eastern Slovenia, has
been added to the list of food products with
protected geographical indications (PGIs). Prekmurska šunka is known for a specific mix
of spices and needs dry and cold winters to
mature successfully. Piranska sol, which received protected
designation of origin (PDO) status, is sea salt
from the saltpans of Sečovlje and Strunjan on
the Slovenian cost. It is produced according to a more than
seven-century old tradition. The salt is harvested on a daily basis and produced on a
natural base of algae and minerals known as "petola", which makes it purer and whiter,
the European Commission wrote. Other Slovenian products on the protected list include idrijski žlikrofi dumplings,
prekmurska gibanica pastry, pumpkin seed oil from the region of Štajersko and
Prekmurje, kraški pršut prosciutto, kraški zašink dried meat from the Kras region and
kraški med honey.
