Ok I'd drag you're friend to a professional, he obviously has a problem and we can't make him virtually eat, infact he might need medication...
But yes try to talk to him and if that doesn't work you need to talk to someone with authority over him.

As you can't force him to eat. The only thing you really can do is be there for him. And maybe talk him into eating. From what you say I'm guessing his mother is getting ready to marry someone that isn't his father. That can cause a lot of stress for some one. and he doesn't feel like he has control over anything that is happening. He wants to have control of something so he chooses his diet and stops eating. What you can try and make him realise is he can still have control over his diet and still eat, and what he is doing is unsafe and could put him in the hospital, and then he wouldn't have control over that. But just be there for him and make sure that you are there when he wants to talk.

As Hyper, and Tyleisme said, you can't really make him eat, but if he won't you need to contact a professional, which as you said you where going to call the school for some help. Good choice dude. You should feel good as a friend, you might hurt him emotionally but trust me when it comes down to it your really helping him get help that he needs.
