The title says it all.
My medication is for depression and its really fucking me over lately. I have been on it for 9 days now and will be on it for another 21 before they decide what to do next.
My problem is, its making me feel extremely I'll and causing some side effects such as concentration loss, suicidal thoughts (believe me or not they actually make these worse for the first month) and dizziness. Not fun.
I was wondering how you guys took your mind of shit like this?

Fluoxetine is an SSRI and can indeed cause those side effects you mentioned. In particular, it is important to be aware that it can increase self-harm ideations in young people.
Taking this class of medication usually requires at least 4-6 weeks before any use is seen. The temptation is to stop prematurely, before the effects can take effect and/or due to the side effects.
It can be quite hard, having to face additional side effects on top of what you already have on your plate. However, the first mindset you should try and have, is that it is one step towards getting better. This in itself immediately makes things far more bearable.
Secondly, I think it would be of great help to have some mutual friends or mentors who can provide support for you during this period of difficulty. Just as one runs a bit further when they have a colleague beside them, the same thing can be said when one faces mental blocks like what is being seen here.
Perhaps you should consider picking up some additional activities, or concentrating further on your current hobbies to help you pass time and distract you from your current concerns. Furthermore, if you do indeed do this, I'd suggest you looking into doing something which is special for you and something which will help push you through these next few weeks.
Music, sports, art and meditation are probably good starting points. Hopefully you will find something special for yourself that you'd like more?

boy i know what you mean. the stuff they put me on made me sick as a dog, especially with really bad stomach cramps. i didn't really have any method of getting through it other then just toughing it out. i know my stimming like rocking was in total overdrive so just doing as much comfort stuff as possible. i've never had suicidal thoughts so don't know about that. with me it was the opposite and being terrified i was going to die from the side effects. in the long run the meds did their job, but holy shit what hell until i acclimated and they kicked in. but i'll tell you the same thing they told me, stick with it, it will get better and be worth it in the long run. my first meds didn't quite do the job, but i didn't have any problem adjusting to the new set since i was already broken in or whatever. but all that stupid stuff you're going through is "normal". hope it passes quickly :hug3:

Haha! I guess I'm trying to advocate for what I was trying to say myself - we should all be mentors, counsellors, friends for each other in time of need. It need to be for any particular reason, just that we need it.
But thank you for pointing that out - when my high school held an aptitude test for the grade, my results had me down for a few particular professions: doctor, researcher, scientist, psychologist, counsellor, administrator, teacher, librarian (how'd that happen? ;) ), priest and a few other things. Guess I come across that way, ay?

Ye, I know what an SSRI is, I always like to learn about the meds I'm on, its just a serotonin reuptake inhibitor, thanks for replying anyway. Its actually quite interesting how it works.
