Since he is a virgin you could have went to fast or he wasn't loose enough or something. Next time try and use lubrication.

I'd say just take it slow and use lube like a lot of the other guys have said. It could also be related to your penis size, if you are fairly large, he may just have to 'loosen up' over time.
