View Full Version : Are speedos becoming acceptable in US?

Hey,
A friend of mine that I've known since elementary school just admitted that he had a speedo and wears it sometimes. He said this around a bunch of people, not just to me. There were about 4 guys and 2 girls talking about it. I ended up being the only guy who doesn't have a speedo. This really surprised me. The girls actually told me that I need to get one.
My friend said that he doesn't wear it for hanging out but for swimming laps and tanning. I've always been curious and wanted one but too scared for what others would think. Now I'm really thinking about getting one.

I don't think so. Most Americans are repulsed at the idea of speedos. I can tell since I've seen American tourists at European resorts. I give credit to your friends for being brave enough to wear them.
I'm from France, and here speedos are perfectly normal swimwear. A lot of younger guys also wear shorts, but all public pools require guys to wear speedos, so if you're planning on living here it would be a good idea to have one. I wear speedos for hanging out at the beach and at the pool. I can swim, but I don't swim laps. I mostly just swim around whichever way I want to. I can't stand board shorts - they feel awful when they're wet. I haven't worn board shorts since the summer of 2012. All of my close male friends wear speedos - even the Muslim ones. My older half-brother Guillaume and a few of my male friends and cousins sometimes wear them to the beach, but when they're at the pool they're always in speedos. Although most of my male friends probably wouldn't declare openly that they wear speedos on a forum.
I saw a similar thing at my school. Two years ago, it seemed like I was one of the only guys at my school who wore a speedo at the beach. Then one of the really cool guys wore one at the beach and soon a lot of my male friends were wearing them more often.
Is your friend a swimmer? That's probably why. If you're feeling jealous, go out and buy a speedo of your own! Speedo's website has plenty to choose from. Believe me - they're much more comfortable than board shorts.

None of them swim on a team. They said they would NOT wear them to the beach with friends, maybe under some boardies. I don't think they are becoming the norm but I do think they are no longer a taboo and gay. Most guys I know are pretty athletic and wear Under Armour or compression shirts so showing your body seems ok now.

I would not mind Speedos becoming an American trend. I think I'd be more comfortable in one too.

I thought they were a whole line of swimming trunks and not just THAT. I would definitely NOT mind seeing other guys in them :D but for me, I'm sticking to the swimming shorts that go past the knees as I just don't like how my knees look for some reason :P

This is because of obesity epidemic in US. Many americans are too fat to look acceptable in a speedo.

I dont think it is becoming norm where I am. But do what you want. It takes guts to wear one if no one else does tho

You shouldn't care about what others think, if you want it it's your choice, don't let anyone hold that back, just because society says so.
I'd think that girls find boys in speedos more attractive in speedos than in swimshorts.

Yeah, as an American, I don't like them at all. They're uncomfortable in my opinion and expose too much for my liking.

I'd prefer speedos. I hate how in America they are seen as gay. I also hate how long shorts stay wet so long. In America speedos are common. A friend of mine wore one to the beach and other men took off their shorts to show the speedo beneath. Sadly many Americans who wear them are obese and speedos get a bad name. I'd love to wear speedos. I will for my cruise. Screw the haters.

I see no shame in wearing speedos because my father told me that I shouldn't feel bad about my body. Even though my brothers do own board shorts, we all wear speedos most of the time. Dad doesn't like board shorts (especially the ones that cover the knee). He's actually glad that I don't wear board shorts anymore. Personally, I don't care what Americans think of speedos because I don't live in America. But you guys are entitled to your own opinions...
I got a new pair of speedos over the weekend. Can't wait to wear them to the beach!

Same here. I am pretty open to stuff like this, but my family and some guys I know would be scared to wear a speedo or anything near revealing. Also, I hate how some think speedos=gay. Since when did swimwear=gayness? I could be the most fabulous looking stereotypical guy ever and be straight. Looks aren't everything in my opinion.

I think they're just trendy. Not a lot of guys wear them but I saw some at the beach. One of my friends wears one but only around us friends, not around his family.

i now have 3 pair and love them. they don't get heavy when wet, dry quickly, and if you have the correct size are very comfortable. my friends now wear them and this spring are seeing more teen boys wearing them too. and i hate the tan lines you get wearing trunks or board shorts and both fill with sand on the beach, but no sand in my speedo because it fits better.

The majority here wears trunks when recreational swimming I think
I do know athletes or the more sporty wear speedo's since it has way less drag, so it's easier to swim.
Personally I don't care, just wear what you want.
I do have to say though that speedo's look better on certain types of guys

I never understood that. Americans seem to be bothered by a man exposing his upper legs.
I don't find them revealing at all. I've seen female tourists from the US wearing bikini bottoms that show way more than speedos do.
I admit, they do look better on thinner guys, but I have overweight friends who wear speedos and I don't give them a hard time about it.

Honestly I think it depends on your body. Even someone chubby can look good in a speedo or bikini. Like a curvy girl or a guy with thick legs. I have a swimmer's build so I want a speedo.

They look good on some chubby guys too. I've got a 26-year-old cousin who's kind of chubby and he looks good in a speedo. My dad's also kind of chubby and he pulls off a speedo quite well.

That's great, but in America people see speedos as gay or pedophile-wear. Also chubby here can be fat in other places. Speedos are just given a bad name. I hate the shorts. They look great as shorts but they take forever to dry! My mother won't let me have a speedo. She's deeply conservative and spiritual in a judgemental way.

Oddly enough that is true. One time a guy took off his shorts to reveal his speedo underneath at a waterpark and many other guys did the same. Turns out many guys wear speedos but are too scared to let it show.

Just overheard a mom and son (looked about 13 or 14) in the sporting goods store, they weren't being very quiet.
They were looking at swim suits and the boy was begging his mom to buy him a speedo (brief-style) so that he could wear it under his boardies. The mom was laughing and seemed embarrassed but her son was confident even saying that his friend John has them too. The mom agreed and said to the boy to pick out the one he wanted which was a bright blue pair.
My friends on the swim team have all gotten rid of the knee-length jammers in favor of the speedo, they say it is more comfortable in the water.

If u got a hot, skinny, teen body why dont you show it off in a speedo....belive me I am speaking frm my experience it wont last that long. One year you'll be skinny and toned and ripped........by 16-17..just few months down you'll look softer......1year later you'll get a ugly layer of soft belly fat!!

My brother and I wear speedos. We have noticed a growing number of fit guys wearing them this summer at public pool/water park. They are comfortable and provide plenty of support. Really do not like the look or feel of board shorts. We are glad we got the speedos and glad to see more guys making the switch. However, if you are not comfortable with your body, wear what is comfortable for you so you can enjoy the pool.

Nice speedo by the way. Patriotic; just a little pricey. Are all speedos expensive? Is it worth it? Do they last? Are you slim? I am but getting some tone like a swimmer. (Slowly)

They cost anywhere from 18 to 40 dollars, depending on style and where you buy them. I just started wearing them this summer and have two styles, both solid color, dark red and black. I am tall and toned football player. See my album. Speedos are chick magnets, get guy looks too. So whatever floats your boat it's good.

As a native of France, I can tell you that they are definitely much more comfortable than baggy board shorts. I cringe when I see young French guys wearing those baggy board shorts that go below the knee. My female friends actually prefer that I wear a speedo. (There's this really annoying b**** at my school who thinks speedos are for old men and complained when she saw me wearing one at the beach.)
Speedos are less expensive over here than in America because most guys here wear them. I have six pairs of my own - most of mine are solid colors, though I do have one with stripes. I like blue speedos the best. I have three blue speedos - one light blue, one dark blue, and one medium blue with white side stripes.

I enjoyed my 3-day beach vacation and spent a fair amount of time in my speedo. On the beach there were no issues, in fact a girl smiled at me as she walked to the shore with her family. The place I stayed had a pool too and I got some bad looks so I never went back in just a speedo, but it was on under my trunks. Weird that the pool was a no-speedo zone by many but the beach was speedo-friendly.
My advice is for fit, good looking guys to get some confidence, get over your body issues (especially if you look good), and wear some swimsuits that are cool. Can't tell you how many dudes were wearing what looked like a circus tent around their waist in the ocean....so sad.

In the U.S., aside from the gay stereotype, a problem is that those suits are made only for competitive
swimming (and diving and water polo) and are only available at larger sporting goods stores, and
then only in one or two colors. It's been a long time since you could find brief suits made for
recreational swimming and sold in stores like Sears and Penneys and Walmart. And it may be
the limited appeal is one reason they are so much higher priced than the suits you can buy at
those department stores.
