Microsoft has said it plans to cut the cost of its Windows Vista operating system sold at retail outlets. Although no exact date has yet been given, Microsoft said price cuts would be introduced in 70 countries. In the US, the cost of the most expensive version, Vista Ultimate, will be reduced to $319 (£161) from the current retail price of $399. Analysts said Microsoft was aiming to boost the number of customers upgrading to Vista, which was introduced in 2007.

'Greater opportunities'

The price cuts apply to the packaged versions of Vista, which account for less than 10% of its sales. By contract, 90% of Vista sales are to PC manufacturers, where the operating system is pre-installed on their computers. "We anticipate these changes will provide greater opportunities... to sell more stand-alone copies of Windows," said Brad Brooks, a Microsoft corporate vice president.

Microsoft says it has now sold 100 million Vista licences since it was launched.

Is the $319 the upgrade price or is it the full version one?

I love the way microsoft said that they've sold 100 million copies

It should be

"Microsoft says it has now sold 100 million Vista licences since it was launched. However thanks to illegal downloads, 10 billion people use Vista illegally"

Take that Bill Gates!

And Mac OS X is still cheaper? Since the start too? AND its all in one version that includes everything? I think I'll stick with Leopard. :P

And to think that only 10% of the sales are people who actually wankted to go out and buy it lol. Vista is a huge failure. Although I'm using it right now I still hate it.

A copy of Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard would cost you $129.00 from the apple store (£60), so that's well less then half the price of Vista yet you're gotting so much more!
