View Full Version : What is normal? What is the mind?

How do you define normal? It is a word, it is a statistic? Does it exist? Is the mind normal? And why ask? I ask because I am curious. If you know of people like me then you know that I am different. I am an artist 24/7 I see and hear and I ask, "How do you expect people to be normal when normal is an illusion?" The brain is not normal per se. We all think different? Why? Why are some great artists and others great scientists? Is that normal? What do we do of those who struggle between their rather manic self and their normal medicated self? Normal is so subjective that many judge others for not having it when those people may not have it themselves. Normal can be boring or orderly, but even order is weird in this chaotic world. So I ask you, what is normal and how do you define it? Keep it civil. I trust you all can manage that.

I thin normal is a construct made up by our thoughts, ideas and society as a whole, it's an illusion. Normal is relative and it's existence has different meanings. The mind is normal if you want to see it that way, otherwise it isn't. Order, normality and truth I see to be relative, chaos, difference and change to be the absolutes.

Normal is what usual and typical. if i put water into a freezer and it turns into ice, that normal. now lets say a kid with autism posts that he doesn't talk, won't make eye contact, is withdrawn, acts inattentive when he's actually paying attention etc. in one way that's not normal behavior. But its normal behavior for autism. so there can be abnormal and normal at the same time. Also normal doesn't always mean good. like its normal for someone who smokes a lot to get cancer.

Normal is somewhat between an average and what people decide is normal by their morals, I guess.
The mind is normal to a person with a mind, the mind is not normal compared to other things in the universe, as it's really complex and unique.
To me, I don't really have a definition of normal,
though where I live, sadly, the word "normal" is a huge part of my culture.
The general atmosphere is "whatever, just act normal".
