View Full Version : Why am I not comfortable around family?

I have no clue why, but I am not comfortable around my family. Sometimes they are overbearing and all of them are way older than me. This has me worried because I am supposed to love my family and be fine around them but I am not fine around them. I have a family vacation in June and am worried about that. I have no clue why I want to get away from my family. I am very sad about this. My mom says family is all I'll have, yet I still feel bad around them. Maybe I feel worried about if my family knew the whole truth about me being a less than straight masculine man versus their views. I doubt it, but I just don't know why I feel bad around and about my family. I am not close to them, so this doesn't help.

You don't have to feel bad really. I am not uncomfortable around people in general but family is my #1 problem. I'm afraid you can't escape the family vacation though. Just grit your teeth you'll survive.

I don't think that there's a way to escape the family vacation... well, apart from telling them thY you don't like them...but I guess you shouldn't do that.
You answered your problem yourself in your post. They are older, so you probably don't have much in common...and you are afraid of being outed.
You should relax and open up more around them, maybe. you find some common interests and topics then...and once you get closer outing won't be so much of a problem.

I'm not close with my familly. I don't know them and my parents and I hate each other. I'm uncomfortable around them too.
I'm not worried, then again I grew up this way so what do I know lol

You're not alone. Many people don't feel comfortable with their family members or anyone else for that matter.
Hopefully, things get better for you.

Seems there's a unanimous vote that people don't get on with their family. I don't really either. I completely get that they are older and so there's little in common. Sounds like you've also got an issue with views and expectations.
But at the end of the day, be who you feel comfortable being, not what you think your family want you to be (most likely they just want you to be happy, even if they don't always show that). The family vacation sounds mandatory, but just relax and take it easy. You only have to do what they say until you're 18.once you move out, you can do whatever. So, if anything, at least you'll have that to look forward to :D

I'm 19 and with no car, college, or anywhere to go. I feel like a failure. But thanks, I will and am taking your words in consideration and with heart.
