In july I should be flying from london to illnois to visit a friend .I've been in a plane when I was younger ,but with all that has been going on recently and my inquisitive nature ,I was wondering how likely something would be to go wrong ? factoring in natural disasters ,hijacking etc ...

Very little, in fact being on an airplane is safer than being in a car and less likely to crash. You should be fine :):D

Extremely, extremely low. While "something to go wrong" can be anything from a seatbelt breaking to anything akin to the recent Malaysian incident, the odds of anything life-threatening happening are very, very, very, very low - about 1 in 7 or 8 million, if I recall correctly.

I feel a lot better now .I get really nervous on planes and end up pacing back and forth ,it's worse now I'm old enough to know about this kind of thing.I hate the fact I'm enclosed and if anything did happen like I had a seizure that we'd be stuck up in the air :| another thing is with my ptsd I'm constantly on the look out ,so i'd be analyzing people constantly ,and probably worrying someone's going to hijack the flight.Mind you I guess they'd hijack a flight to say new york or something rather than a london- illnois flight ,it's not exactly the typical holiday destination. >:| thanks for the answer !

If it's any help - In the last 365 days I've been on nearly 500 flights (it's my job :P) and nothing has happened. Don't worry, you're in safe hands while flying. If anything were to happen, like as you said you had a seizure or whatever else, the crew are all highly trained to help and the plane can be landed at the nearest airport. Make sure you tell the crew when you're boarding the flight in July that you are apprehensive about flying and they will look after you :)

Damn I'd'd never want to work on or with planes >:/ I'm happy with working towards the military side of things .I'll make sure to tell them ,not that they wouldn't be able to tell.I'm epileptic and stressful situations are my trigger - do you think i'd be able to get something from my doc to calm or sedate me for the flight ? I know its going to be a long one and there's a stop over on most of the flights (I haven't booked yet ,I'm waiting for my new passport)

If you want to go down the route of medication, your doctor will be able to help, whether they will prescribe anything though is up to them, but I've definitely seen passengers taking stuff to calm them.

If you want to, just google the statistics, if that makes you feel better- they're very low.

Have a safe flight and don't stress too much! And be prepared, Illinois summers are hot and humid.

The likelyhood of a disaster on a plane is slim as it is a much safer mode of travel than car and most accidents happen because of winter weather and seeing as this is taking place in the summer it should be fine were something to go wrong the plane is equipped for abandonment of the aircraft on land as well as the sea also all commericial aircraft are closely monitered if you plane's signal were to go offline commication would emmititly try to be re estiblished if that does not happen emergincy crews would be dispatched and trust me they are well prepared to rescue you from the middle of the atlantic ocean. Terrorism frightens many people not just you but it is extremely hard to get onto planes with weapons nowadays. But if your still scared book a flight with an air marsha onboard. Hope this helps.

Highly improbable. You're much more likely to be in an accident while in almost any other vehicle.
