View Full Version : I'm in trouble. Should I confess or not?

I'm in really big trouble that could lead me to suspension and a lot of demerits. So this is what happened: On Friday, I went back to my classroom to get my bag as I had left it there to go do something. No one else was there. When I reached my place, I noticed that the floor surrounding my table was wet and my bag was wet too. It looked like someone spilled their water and did not have the decency to clean it up completely or even throw away the tissues that they used.
I was very angry and upset. All I could think about was all those times people from my class had disturbed my stuff over the few months and I had let the issues go, refusing to get angry. But they had all just come rushing back to me the moment I saw the mess. I wasn't going to let it go this time.
So, as motivation to find out who did it and to remind me of this, I came up with the stupid idea to write in the middle of the whiteboard who did it. I couldn't find any whiteboard markers and I was getting desperate. Then, I saw some sharpies on a friend's table and took a black one. I didn't realise that it was going to be permanent.
I wrote on the board "WHO THE F**K LEF" and I stopped there because I had a really bad feeling about it and was going to rub it off but it was permanent! And since I didn't have a whiteboard marker, I couldn't rub it off.
I went home after that and decided to try and come up with a solution over the weekend. I found a solution and was planning on going to school early today to get rid of it. The problem was that when I arrrived at school this morning, a lot of people had already come even though I was usually one of the first and I just couldn't sum up the courage to get rid of the words in front of them.
Btw, when I came back on Friday (I was still pretty angry), I had immediately go on facebook to ask who spilled their water in my class facebook group. Of course, no one replied. This later caused a problem because it made my classmates suspicious of me.
Anyway, then, I just pretended that I didn't do it. For our first lesson, we had our class teacher so he was the first teacher to see it. He went out to get a whiteboard marker to erase it and brought back the fearful disciplinarian with him. He took a picture of it and said he would find out who did it.
After that, the teacher didn't mention anything and didn't say that if we confessed, the punishment would be lessened. They don't have cameras in the classrooms, I think, and the cameras are outside the classrooms, I think.
What am I supposed to do?! What started out as something that I just thought needed justifying has turned into a disaster! A classmate actually know that it is me and I am not fully sure that she can keep it secret. The director wouldn't understand. I've gone to see him about other stuff a few times about changing classes but he just thinks that I have a social problem and that I should just try harder even though I cried genuine tears in front of him.
I need help... :(

Boy that's a tough one. I know I would probably stay silent and take my chances. They probably have better things to do than pursue something like that. I'm not telling you what you shroud do, I'm just saying what I would probably do in that situation.

This could be trouble. Firstly I wouldn't confess because confessing doesn't actually help, just makes things bad. It sounds like you're safe save for the one (potential) witness. You basically have 2 options then.
1. Bribe her to shut up and keep quiet.
2. Pull a Gaius Marius only WITHOUT killing/maiming her.
Good luck man

Just keep quiet...
Does *anyone* know YOU were the one that wrote it? Like, your classmates?

I'd confess. Speak to a teacher you're somewhat closer to and say you're sorry and all, act it up a little bit, it'll be alright

^^Not true. Suspensions stay on your record forever and could have some serious repercussions later on.
This is a difficult situation. You can confess and maybe they'll be lenient, or you can pretend you had nothing to do with it. Personally, I wouldn't say anything and try to play it off, but this is a huge gamble because if they find out you did it, the consequences could be harsher. If you decide not to confess, you're going to have to come up with a solid story; you walked in, got your backpack, walked out, and never noticed anything out of the ordinary, except for the spilled water. It's all up to you.

Wow they stay on your school record what happens after you graduate? nothing is there so there is no repercussions at all. Ive had many suspensions and have never had any repercussions after.

Well it sounds like it is very unlikely that you will get caught...it reminds me of the time I was writing cuss words on the sidewalk on the way to a class and after class I saw a police officer and an assistant principal looking at it I was freaking out because there were cameras...however I didn't get caught

I would personally keep quiet, it's not like you hurt anyone. I'm sure after a few days it will become less of a priority. I'd work on finding alternative ways of relieving your anger, we all get angry & do things that we later regret. I also do things like this when I'm angry. I don't know your schools policies but vandalism can have pretty harsh consequences, so I wouldn't confess. If someone did this at my school it would probably result to in house suspension & maybe a few days of school beautification (cleaning around the school).

Getting into the college of your choice could easily become nothing more than a fantasy, if your record is riddled with suspensions. Of course, there are those who don't care, but I'm not here to address people like that.

Been in this situation before. Not me who did it but someone else wrote on the board with a permanent marker and I think but not exactly sure, I think they kept us all in over breaktime or lunchtime because no one would come clean. I dunno... I would say to keep quiet, but what if they get suspicious? In our case all the person wrote was "HI" but in really big writing, so I don't know how big consequences you're going to face if they found out you wrote this, but if you get into this kind of situation I know because I've experienced it quite a lot over the shitty past few years and know how annoying it can be if everyone gets held up because one person doesn't come forward. If they have no suspicions and you don't think they will, you're most likely fine, but I'm pretty sure in my case who ever did it did eventually get into trouble, but I was never quite sure how severe...
EDIT: I'm not sure too much on this either but I GUESS you won't be punished as much if it's a first time offence? I Just thought after reading some above posts, but I got into trouble twice in year 7 and once in year 11, and they said to me when I panicked in year 11 that it wouldn't affect my record because I wasn't directly involved in the incident and I had so little problems in those few years (partly because of autism and the fact they were probably too afraid to deal with it) that it wouldn't affect me at all, just something they felt they had to deal with even though they didn't deal with my problems with this person when he was causing me a lot of crap.

I think it really depends on what kind of person you are. If I were you I'd confess... just because I know full well it is my fault (love, I hate to say this, but you need to practice anger management) and there's slim chance of escaping.

Absolutely. It's absolutely your decision, but if you want to be trusted in the future at all, they do discover that you did that, it'll be somewhat mitigated by the fact that you were honest. Lies are ultimately toxic.

My style: talk to a teacher who is really cool...he/she will tell you the next step.
(It's preferable to choose a teacher who is popular among the teaching staffs!)

This is a tough one... I'm kind of a kiss up so with my I will either tell the truth or I will lie my ass off and dig a huge hole that I will have to get out of later... Depending on if you can pull off a decent lie then I would say lie

If anything it's better if you tell the principal instead of a friend, yes it may be hard, but being honest can get you out of situations or at least make you feel a little better inside.
hope this helps.

I would confess. Just say it was an act of anger, and you didn't know that it would be permanent. That will not only lessen the punishment, but also get it off of your mind. I know it seems hard to do, and it is. But the relief is worth it.

If I were you, my instinct would probably be to stay quiet. That seems like something you could easily get away with if you stay quiet. Without video proof or witnesses, they'll have a tough time finding out who did it without them confessing.
However, if you DO choose to confess, just say that you just got really angry and you weren't thinking straight. Usually confessing doesn't ease the punishment that well, as some people lead you to believe.
If I were you I'd stay quiet, but that's just me.

I write on school property with permanent marker all the time, it's something most school are used to, it's just something that students do, not necessarily on a whiteboard, but the school knows it happens and it's not something you should be worrying about, really.

I may be saying this from my own personal code of staying honest; you should stand behind your action and tell the director the truth. Like the other people said in the forum, you can tell how frustrated you were and etc. Otherwise, you'll always be on the edge of your seat and it may come out that you did it out of nowhere.
