A community production is aiming to use theatre to shed light on taboo surrounding young people and mental health issues.

The PANIC production, uses real interviews from young people who’ve experienced mental health issues as a basis for the play’s script.

The stories gathered cover a range of challenges facing young people; from stress about exams, to struggles with losing a parent to suicide or living with a family member with a mental illness.

Director, Erika Gelzinnis says the play is a unique way to create conversation about the issue.

“In many ways, our development process has been just as important, if not more, as the performance itself. All through the production, the kids have worked together to create a safe space where they can learn about issues of mental health, as well share their own thoughts and experiences. They really have been quite amazing”, she said.

The production runs until the 12th of April.
