I had to do a double-take when I saw this, but it's true:

It’s official: Stephen Colbert will replace David Letterman as CBS’ Late Show host.
The broadcast network has tapped the 49-year-old Comedy Central host to take over the late-night franchise.
CBS has made a five-year deal with Colbert, which was announced Thursday by CBS Corp. CEO Les Moonves and CBS Entertainment chairman Nina Tassler.
“Stephen Colbert is one of the most inventive and respected forces on television,” Moonves said. “David Letterman’s legacy and accomplishments are an incredible source of pride for all of us here, and today’s announcement speaks to our commitment of upholding what he established for CBS in late night.”

Letterman, the longest-serving late-night TV host, announced his retirement on April 3. Colbert’s premiere date will be announced after Letterman determines a timetable for his final broadcast in 2015.“Stephen is a multi-talented and respected host, writer, producer, satirist and comedian who blazes a trail of thought-provoking conversation, humor and innovation with everything he touches,” Tassler added. ”He is a presence on every stage, with interests and notable accomplishments across a wide spectrum of entertainment, politics, publishing and music. We welcome Stephen to CBS with great pride and excitement, and look forward to introducing him to our network television viewers in late night.”
“Simply being a guest on David Letterman’s show has been a highlight of my career,” Colbert said. “I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave’s lead. I’m thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth.”

I wasn't expecting this at all. I love Stephen and The Colbert Report is by far my favorite show on television. He plays a character on the Report, though, so it's going to be very interesting to see him just being himself. This means the end of The Colbert Report though, so I guess it's kind of bittersweet.

Thoughts?

This is interesting, because I am under the impression that he and Jimmy Fallon are friends (from the times I have seen Stephen on Fallon's old show).

I've always thought so as well. A big departure from Leno and Letterman, who had some bad blood between them.

Jimmy Fallon took over for Jay Leno and I would have expected Craig Ferguson who comes on after David Letterman to take his spot.

I was hoping so, because I think Craig is the best in the business. I guess his style of comedy is just a better fit at 12:30, as opposed to an hour earlier.

I wonder if there's more to the story. Like he was expecting it and they passed him over. I would expect him to have plenty of sarcastic stuff to say about it.

Knowing him, he'll probably have a field day.

I would have been really shocked if Craig had taken over. First, I don't think they'd consider him since his show is so unprofessional and second, I don't think he would take it. I think it's pretty clear he enjoys how laid back his show is and how he can basically do anything he wants.

And as for Stephen. I'm pretty unhappy with it. I LOVE the Colbert Report and I don't think the Late Show will quite hold up to how funny the Report is. But it will be convenient to see my two favorite late show hosts going back to back.

And what will this mean for Stephen and John Stewart? I liked their little friendly rivalry. :(

I've always thought this as well. CBS would tighten the leash if Craig was moved up an hour, and I don't think that would work at all. Right now he can pretty much do or say whatever he wants, and I know he likes that a lot.

I think Craig Ferguson is hilarious and he should get the job. The other guys are too stuffy and it would be nice to see someone fun like Craig for a change. His show is the best!

Yeah I agree, Craig is BY FAR the funniest host in the business, but he just wouldn't have been right for the Late Show. Plus, they would've had to build a stable for Secretariet and install a new outlet for Geoff, the gay robot skeleton.:D
